Three short sung recordings, SM7b /w low cut, all into the same 1073 type preamp. I don't have golden ears and I am probably losing objectivity. Help? Three different takes. One take is recorded ...with EQ disabled. ...with EQ disabled, but presence boost engaged on SM7b. ...with EQ engaged, HPF 70 and a very slight mid mud cut. ALL files are compressed around 5 db with MJUC plugin compressor, nothing else. Please tell me which one you prefer and why. Forgive my mediocre voice I will not be doing a 'reveal', but I will answer privately if you have question(s). Just vote first, please THANK YOU! Attachments:B.wav (1.01 MB)
C.wav (1.07 MB)
A.wav (1.01 MB)

Good sounding voice, very rich and that brings with exactly the type of challenge we all deal with... keeping the body but losing the body fat.
The one labeled C has the clearest middle but loses some low end beef. Can you try just doing the low mid/mud cut and using the presence switch?
Just a suggestion!
Edited and the reason for editing? Autocorrect hates me and changed 'mud' to 'mic' . . . I also clarified by saying low mid/mud

Can you try just doing the low mic cut and using the presence switch? Actually, the mic has the low cut engaged in all three clips. Sorry for not mentioning that! I've now updated the thread. I will try with it disabled next.

I like A the best. I didn't really try to discern which one was which though. C seemed to have a weird midrange around the F of "feel".

My preference might be different depending on how busy the mix context was but as is solo'd, I'd choose 1.-A, 2.-C and 3.-B

My preference might be different depending on how busy the mix context was but as is solo'd, I'd choose 1.-A, 2.-C and 3.-B I came to the same conclusion. They were all really good depending on the type of production. A seemed good for vocal forward stuff, C for rock, B for indie mellow stuff maybe? Great voice btw. As a side note, my iphone wouldn’t play the files until I downloaded them and played from download. It wasn’t an intuitive process, I imagine some other people using mobile had trouble with playback.

A and B are fairly close. I like B because there's a "electrical dynamic" thing going on with the high bass in A--which does make it seem "bigger" on some syllables, but more uneven.
C I have to assume is the change at the mic, which will typically make more difference than EQ/MJUC.
I would say, first impression, "A" would be the hardest to work with because of the uneven nature of it's "body"--that tends to get worse, not better with compression. B could just peel a -1db of 1k'ish...and probably a 2khz bell rise wherever your voice has "air"--usually between 8-13khz. Probably what I'd choose....and C, while easily worst sounding as is, COULD be a simple low (bell say 140hz) boost into a slow compressor away from fine--I'd have to hear it, but...it just sounds kind of like a lot a honky 57, which is what that mid tweak and HPF on an SM7 sort of makes it.

All depends on the mix! But A sounded most balanced to me.

I liked A best of all for being 'natural-sounding', then C for its clarity, and B last for having both less clarity and warmth. However, this is in isolation, and in the context of a mix I might well switch to C, then A, than B.

pretty in line with everyone else, I liked A the best as it was most neutral, C might cut a dense mix better or sound more "lively" depending on the energy of the track.
