Unfortunately the Big Six has developed a ticking noise and the master bus inserts aren't functioning correctly. You can gently touch the wires on the back and L / R volume changes will occur.
I've been told repair / replacement dates can take up to two months, I'm not bothered about that because simply put I need to find a better solution anyway. Even if I get a replacement I'll end up selling it so.. What next? I have 20 pieces of HW including some master bus processing..
I could go down the DAW HW insert route but that has its own challenges but it would simplify the setup in several ways. Every time I go down the desk route something seems to go awry for some reason, I could find another board but I'm not sure what within a somewhat limited budget and I'm a bit put off at this stage.
Suggestions? Would really appreciate some.

If you don't have a rock solid PCI-E rig or HDX, don't use inserts on multi-miced stuff that might phase. Track through stuff and use inserts on isolated tracks and busses 3) Use something like a Dangerous Liason maybe? Could cut down on phasing. 3) Go ITB. You better like measuring every plug to find the sweet spot or if you can really push it and have at least an M1 mini. AT LEAST. You can push that to the limit fairly easily

1) Repair and sell or return the Chinese SSL. That's a given, I've asked for a replacement and it's getting sold soon as I receive it. Had enough..
2) DAW inserts. Use HDX, Reaper or Logic. You better like the sound of your conversion. If you don't have a rock solid PCI-E rig or HDX, don't use inserts on multi-miced stuff that might phase. Track through stuff and use inserts on isolated tracks and busses Going down the Pro Tools Carbon / MTRX path is definitely an option and not a bad idea, although all of my interfaces are TB with extremely low latency. When tracking I won't be using inserts anyway, I have plenty of dedicated HW for that purpose. I use Logic by the way, its ping I/O feature seems pretty good but I've never used it in depth thus far.3) Use something like a Dangerous Liason maybe? Could cut down on phasing. I'll look into it.3) Go ITB. You better like measuring every plug to find the sweet spot or if you can really push it and have at least an M1 mini. AT LEAST. You can push that to the limit fairly easily Selling all that HW at a loss would be rough to say the least. At this stage it would only happen if there's no other solution, drbill seems to be rocking external pieces without a desk. It's like I'm a delayed shadow copycat..

I do HW inserts, I wouldn't want it any other way, but I haven't tried another way other than ITB. I love using the hardware insert method, using a lynx converter I don't feel afraid of multiple conversions. Flit between projects with my hardware usually at a static setting, hardly any adjustments to settings for recall, haven't had any issues thus far.

Isn’t this the setup you’ve landed on after multiple attempts to get a new workflow? It seemed you were pretty darned happy with it.
So... let ssl make it right, swap it out for a new one and get to work. I highly doubt you’re going to wind up with another lemon.

So... let ssl make it right, swap it out for a new one and get to work. I highly doubt you’re going to wind up with another lemon. That's a tough one, the methodology is very straight forward but I am still partially ITB. In terms of sound I fritter, I mean one day I like the 1248 (MOTU), the Lynx or the SSL but I tend to lean more towards the interfaces. I've no issues with the SSL sound wise, although if I can just use HW inserts for comp's, verbs, EQ's and master bus processors then it does negate a lot of the SSL's benefits. I think the biggest thing is as I said in my review, I'm not convinced by the build quality. I've had my MOTU 1248 since 2013 and it's a tank in interface form so I can't seem to part with it. I'm very unlucky when it comes to desks LOL and I think I could benefit more from a monitor upgrade than said desk. As long as I can use my hardware efficiently and effectively without comb filtering I'm happy. I just need to know how this works exactly, if I use the I/O plug in Logic does it act like a "real time" insert? Do I just print the final mix? I mean if that's the case then I'm not benefitting by having the SSL. I will of course experiment but I'm sure some members on this board know the intricate details far better than I do.

I use h/w inserts and print everything back into the daw and null test before moving on. Also use a free plug called snapshot that lets you add photos if your outboard settings for if you ever need to recall fir changes to the outboard. (For other changes, no need to recall because it’s been printed back into the daw).
Lynx Aurora conversion.

So, you say "You can gently touch the wires on the back and L / R volume changes will occur".. Just an honest question.. Do you mean cables you have plugged into the unit? Have you tried reseating the cables, cleaning the contacts and/or replacing the cables?
One of the biggest issues I ever had with tons of wiring for the mixer/outboard was that finger oils on some connectors would lead to iffy connections. I had to clean every connector with alcohol before I could get every single ELCO, XLR, TRS/TS, TT to maintain constant connection. I probably had 300 different connectors and I swear that more than 50% of them would get weird at some point over the years.

It seems like a summing mixer and patchbay might be the best way to go. The Pueblo above, at 32 channels, would be good. RND makes 3 different models, Dangerous (as mentioned). There are a lot of options.

It's like I'm a delayed shadow copycat.. Yes. No desk here. Well, I have a couple rack mounted D&R Visions , but they only get used when I need an EXTREME amount of mic pre's (almost never) or want to submix my hardware synths all together. I've worked OTB with traditional tape and consoles. Tape and Digital tape sync'd together with consoles. Tape and DAW's sync'd together with consoles. DAW's alone - ITB. And now working hybrid with large amounts of outboard and I/o (120) and PTHDX. Pretty much any workflow you can think of - I've tried, and ultimately left behind once settling on HDX and the hybrid approach I'm currently using. Working hybrid with my current setup is by far the best sounding, smoothest, and most efficient way of working for me. I love consoles, and wouldn't mind having one, but not a cheap Chinese mixer, and not unless I had a bigger room that was primarily focused on tracking large ensembles. Consoles are a huge commitment - money wise, wiring and interface wise, time and maintain wise, and space / reflection wise. For me, today, they are just not needed and not worth it for me anymore. Smaller "Mixers" are too compromised right out of the gate for me. And for me, summing mixers are just an un-needed sideways distraction. Get a real console and make the commitment, or get the good stuff, get it on your channel and mix buss inserts and get back to making music and quit worrying about the studio gear. Studio's always take a good degree of troubleshooting and maintainance, but the more you can minimize that and focus on the music the better. BTW - on the other note - your L/R problem sounds like wiring. Or possibly the jacks on the mixer.

I don't and can't really disagree. Although the reason I went down that path is it's a simple to use routing matrix / sidecar and it's supposed to have the same SuperAnalogue circuitry as the bigger desks. That being said I left my SSL 4K behind for a reason and that wasn't a compromised 12 channel mixer. Nostalgia's a funny thing.. I've done all OTB and I've done ITB but never tried to use HW as an extension of my DAW before, so this is new territory for me. Yes, I very much concur I would just like to get on with it and I don't track bands anymore so as much as I like the idea I'll just stick to decent interfaces. It's already booked in to be replaced then I'm going to trade it in for some better monitors.

Sounds like Chinese OEM build quality with lots of small physical things that can break that SSL doesn't want to pay money for better options. The power supply is usually the most expensive part. I presume it's an OEM regulated switcher and those can be quite expensive. SSL seems to be going the way of Focusrite while also trying and trying failing to get into plugins and control surfaces. Lots of dead on arrival stuff meant to compete with Dangerous Music, Better Maker, Softube, and every better developer than them.

Not tracking bands... but attracting outside engineers & artists for overdubs & mixing? Personal use? What are the intended applications? Right it seems like you've started 400 threads about this and now back at ground zero? I dunno. At some point the insanity has to end. You say things are booked... time is short and extremely valuable plus there's music to be made yes? Personally if I needed a desk, like a real desk I'd have been looking on the used market vs a new scaled down 4 channel China box. There's a D&R Triton in the classifieds now at $5000. My old Soundcraft is still here... 32 channels w/cabling & stand... saw a used Neotek Elan locally at I think $4000? Shortloaded to 20 channels. Anything like even if it had to be crated & shipped to the moon & back? Your still ahead of the game.

Personally if I needed a desk, like a real desk I'd have been looking on the used market vs a new scaled down 4 channel China box. I've not done any commercial work in over a decade.. Most of my time / fiscals went into the new house over the last couple of years and I work a lot so this has been slow going. Plus our current global situation has delayed lead times by months, I ordered my Vari-mu's in September for example and only got them a month or so ago. I like the LFAC workflow but its been nearly two decades since I owned one now, after money got tight I switched to an MBox, native / UA 1. I distinctly remembered disliking it, then I bought a Zed-R16 with some middling HW and it was fine for years. Part of my new studio setup is top shelf stuff across the board, Chandler, Neve, RND, Shadow Hills, API etc.. Yes I see the irony in shoving tons of expensive HW through a middle of the road mixer. However it was a simple to use routing matrix and it did the job, until it didn't. Big boards are unnecessary, expensive and require maintenance that I don't have time to deal with. When I do some music it's a matter of practicing, throwing up faders and hitting record.. Unless I dedicate holidays to doing music then I'll get a one / two hour slot a couple of times a week at best. I spent some of my last holiday fixing some Shelfords instead of recording. In short if something doesn't come with a warranty I don't entertain it, if something breaks I'll often just replace it. That being said I really did like my original OTB setup and I need to find a happy medium / workflow between a full scale setup and ITB. I'm sure it'll happen some day, anyway I'm new to Logic so I'm testing out some stuff.. Fingers crossed.

Ever look at Ferrofish stuff? Seems designed to bring outboard into a hybrid mix setup.
That SSL Big Six design is either too much or too little. The anti-Goldielocks.

SSL has always had some kind of issues of branding and/or marketing ever since their niche in large-format mixers died. They've also had spotty choices in parts sometimes too. 15 years ago I bought into their Mixpander/Alphalink setup which was great. Expensive, but great. DSP based plugs running on a hardware accelerated mixing matrix application? Awesome.
A few years later they stopped supporting it, but I didn't need to upgrade so I kept using it.
Finally, it was clear I needed to move to a new computer and move up to higher samplerates and such.
I bought into their new MX4 DSP card and MADI Alphalink setup. It was also great. It was a total mess trying to set it up though. There was a manual for the MX4. A manual for the Alphalink. A quickstart manual. A manual for the application/software. None of these used the same wording for identical features. Some of them used mismatched point of view for directionality of signal flows. None of them took into account that portions of one manual needed to be followed before you could do something with a piece of the system that was covered in a totally different manual. It was like 4 different teams wrote their own manuals and nobody was actually managing the whole product ecosystem.
It took like 3 days to get it all working well, but when it worked, it was flawless.
A couple years later I started having issues with random high level noise on a bank of 8 channels. It would burst and then go away, usually right in the middle of recording. One time it damn near deafened a singer who was really, really angry at me for it and I had to stop the session for the day.
it took me a few months to track the problem down to a cable inside the Alphalink. It was a ribbon cable where it seems some of the puncture-contacts were not making good contact. I would reseat the connector and it would work for a while and then start acting up again. I got to the point where I just left the lid of the device off and everytime it would do this, I would reach in and fiddle with the cable and it would be good for weeks/months. SSL wouldn't even talk about it with me.
So eventually I just removed the cable and connectors and soldered wires between the two PCBs and it fixed it for good.
But then SSL abruptly removed the MX4 and Alphalink from their website and dropped support without warning. I had an error one time and contacted support only to have them tell me that they don't support discontinued products.
The MX4 was only about 4 years old from release to discontinued. I used it for a few more years and moved to MOTU instead.

I think I get it. For one thing warranty has never mattered to me. Most of the time its only one year... if something breaks at year five your own your own anyway. And I've personally bought most of my junk used. And boy there's a lotta junk here. New junk and really old junk. I tend to buy computer junk new but only because I want to get a lotta years and run the tires off. There's also plenty of junk that's never needed service in its life or a minor repair at best. Have had a pair of 1176LN in my racks for 20 years, maybe 1 repair? Most 'old school' things are fixable short of a fire... but I also know a guy who bought an Amek that had been on fire, put it back together and made a bunch of records on it... Anyway. Yes much to be said for time management & overall ease of use. Screwing around with things instead of being creative is always frustrating. Maintenance time is a necessary evil and ideally, doesn't creep into & rob creative time. Personally? If I weren't making records for a living & only working on my own music? I'd sell most of the junk and mix totally ITB. Keep some choice mics to cover drums and a full band... handful of preamps and a couple 3 pieces of outboard so I could track vocals & dubs with confidence. The whole desk & patchbay thing? Gone. In a heartbeat. How do I put it..? Think a valid question is for me, with my own music is that if I were working on a serious release... would I realistically wind up mixing my own album or would I hire it out? Honestly after writing & recording songs... beating up bandmates & myself for performances? Its probably hired out. Wash my hands of that task. I love my desk and all the outboard. Really do but I don't "need" that shit to make music. Even now if I decide to mix something ITB then I stay totally ITB. To me there's no debate they're just different sets of tools. No question though that running & maintaining a decidedly analog based shop is an incredible commitment. Its as much a lifestyle choice as anything else. Sorta like how a 1969 Dodge Charger is a helluva car but most days a Toyota is way more practical if 'ya just need to get to the grocery store & back.

I've already spent years in the ITB mixing domain and personally, for me it doesn't cut the mustard (because I'm after a specific sound). Whilst I'm sure there's plenty of reasons I'm doing this for my own self satisfaction so it's somewhat irrelevant. I can't escape ITB entirely but all of my investments bar the mixer thus far have been totally worth it, at this point I have the same equipment as named high end OTB mixers so why not use it? gwlee7 might be happy to hand everything off but I consider mixing (whatever definition that holds) to be part of the overarching sonic soundscape, unless there's a specific reason to hand it off like I've hit a "wall" I want control over the process and when the moons align meaning things go my way it can be fiscally counterintuitive. If I've learned nothing else over the decades, I finally know what I want and what I'm looking for. I know how to get there, I know what's important and I know what's not.. I'll make mistakes just as ericn pointed out but that's part and parcel.. At one point I couldn't even decide what sort of music I wanted to do, utterly infuriating as that was and I had some performance anxieties to address. It was easier for me to hide behind a console or my next purchase than to try as a musician again. Things have changed though.. Given the chance I'd do music for a living, not engineering I mean perform. Having a technical orientated career has been both a blessing and a curse because you trade time for money. If I want a 32 channel Genesys Black it's not out out of reach, if I want an RND 5060 I can get one tomorrow without saving or incurring debt. Sure, life dictates priorities but this year at least I'm focussed on audio.. That being said I don't whizz money up a wall and there has to be some serious justification to buy a console in this day and age. I'm not sure how we got onto this subject as interesting as it is, if I can just use HW in my preferred way via a DAW workflow than a desk can kiss my derrière. If not I'll have to convince myself and my other half that it's a worthy venture.. The SSL was cheap, easy, did routing and that's all I really needed. I took the time to repair my Shelfords because I like them and they weren't cheap. I was hoping the SSL would last me three years then I'd bin it for something better. At this point I have no interest in it whatsoever so it ain't staying..
