This means I can't just turn it on while my computer is on, I have to shut down completely, leave Apollo on and then turn my computer back on.
I did the most recent update with Apollo X. It's a small but real PITA.

That's interesting Mark. It always has turned on at any time except for a few months many years ago. I think it's a software glitch. I tried going to the UA forum, but navigating that labyrinth turned me off.

Check that your cables are seated properly.
I am on the UA forum daily and this has not been reported there as far as I know.
So, are you running Monterey on your Mac ?

On UA forum I saw some references to people having some plug loading problems after installing UA control.
If you have your uadX plugs installed you can delete UA control from your applications folder, but apparently UA will use it to communicate about Spark.
The uadX downloads were obviously buggy and delayed due to server load but UA did sone recoding to fix that issue.
Maybe delete UA control, then redownload the UA drivers making sure they are compatible with your Mac OS.

Apogee Control 2 and Maestro are similarly misbehaving at times. So is the MOTU web mixer. The nuclear option is RME

Martin, Apollos all need to be powered up before computer is initiated. Will work fine if done in that sequence.
Otherwise it's a crapshoot.

Yeah, IIRC, this is normal for Apollos. I had the same issue when my Apollo was virtually brand new — if I powered on my Mac first, there was a 50/50 chance the Apollo wouldn't be recognized. I then found a UA article somewhere stating that the Apollo needs to be powered on first.

I always had to have my Apollos on before booting the computer if I wanted to be sure they would connect.

One 8p MKII and one x6. For the time I've own Apollo, which is several years now, I've never had issues booting and talking to the computer. There may have a hickup here or there, but nothing that made me want to reach out to customer service. That is until the prior to latest UAD version. I had issues getting it to lock with Logic and sometimes I'd have to reboot the interface and the computer multiple times. I sent logs to them three times and tried multiple TB cables. The most recent UAD update seems to have solved all the issues. In fact, my load up time is faster than I ever recall.

I had some trouble a while back about my Satellite not getting seen when I turned my 2 Apollos & satellite on before waking the studio computer so I changed the order and now I wake the iMac first and then turn on the rack power conditioners... Probably more switching involved than your use case.
I do turn off the Apollos & satellite when I am not in the studio because they sit in (and are powered from) the racks with the other gear. I have found it does not matter which order I turn off the racks and sleep the iMac in.
It can be a real pain finding what works and then making sure you do that order, every time.

Martin, Apollos all need to be powered up before computer is initiated. Will work fine if done in that sequence. Otherwise it's a crapshoot. I remember that was what was recommended years ago, but I've been using the Apollo since the first week they were introduced, and for as long as I can remember, (at least the last 4-5 years) I could turn it on at any time and there was no trouble at all. Let's say I'm doing things online in the morning and then I want to start mixing something, to have to turn the computer completely off and then start the Apollo is a PITA. If it had never worked unless you started the Apollo first, I would accept that, but since it's only after the recent update, it's bugging me. * I'm not one of those guys that just leaves gear on all day, I like shutting down what I'm not using.

Obviously your call, but the power surge with the on cycles stresses it much more than just leaving it on, throughout the day.

I know in the scheme of things it's like a raindrop on the ocean, but I always feel conscious of wasting energy. I shut off lights I don't need, recycle as much as possible, and don't waste water, etc.
So it's not easy for me to leave an appliance on if I'm not using it. It also makes me wonder if leaving it on contributes to it wearing out sooner.
