OK the tape project guys and a sudden plethora of used tapes in the neighborhood has me thinking I want a dedicated playback deck at home. Yes I have a AG440, Akai that takes 7in and a A77. While I love the sound of my AG440 for home a modern transport would be more fun.
here is what I’m considering Ampex ATR 700. Yeah it’s really a Teac but it’s probably the best of Teac. Otari MX5050 II or III. Work horse machine can be found with. Both 1/4 and1/2 track payback heads. Technics RS1500 series. Yeah weird transport but like 5050 can playback both 1/4 & 1/2 track Like the transport but for $ not a huge fan of the sound. REVOX B77/Pr99. Probably my favorite, lots of mods and updates and parts. Most expensive of the bunch.
your thoughts.

Is this to transfer to digital?

Pr99 always seemed like a punch above its weight class machine to me. Are there any of those that are 7.5, 15, and 30 IPS?

I've always heard good things about the Revox...
My Mx5050 mkII sits dead in the water currently. I do have some mixdown/prints from a project I need to finish, thank goodness. Every time I compare the digital to the tape mixdowns I go "ah, that sounds like art".
Not sure about parts for Otari's... I got my machine for $30 though. Lol.

I have a PR99 and I love it. Mine has 7.5 and 15 ips. I don't think there are any 30 ips around, but I could be wrong. The good thing about these Revox/Studer machines, besides the sound, is that so many were built and parts are readily available. I also still have a Dolby-equipped A77. Pure nostalgia.

I was given a TEAC/TASCAM A-3440 4-track at some point and I've been slowly refurbishing it. I've recapped the whole thing and now cleaning up the mechanicals. It's a really well built machine.

Revox is consumer Studer. Teac is consumer Tascam. Don't forget, ericn, our colleague M57 is selling a Fostex Model 20 (7" 7.5/15ips) in the classifieds. An extremely underrated old tape deck.

I have 3 RS1500 desks that I'm looking to sell. 1 working tip top and 2 for parts. Unfortunately, it doesn't make sense to ship.
