I would include the Stam and of course, the Audioscape if you're mentioned the gSSL - or do you mean that as a category? If so, there are a bunch of other buss comps that should be considered. Mainstream, industry-standard stuff.

I’ve not used the AC Sound, but I wouldn’t think of using a pair of DBX 160VU’s for mix buss duties

in DIY land, I can only think of the GSSL comp (definitely with the "Turbo" board). I built one with DBX vca's, and I'm enjoying it so far The other DIY compressor projects are the 160, LA-2A, LA-3A, 1176, Sta Level and other slower tube units that I don't associate with mix bus duties. There is this transformerless vari-mu that looks interesting: Transformerless Vari Mu

i was thinking diy buss comps. but stam and audioscape could well be better solutions. Is AC Sound still around? I thought he had a bad falling out? At one point I ordered some CLX kits from him, but he never shipped them. I’m lucky to have gotten my money back, either through him or PayPal (I can’t remember), but I heard of others who weren’t so lucky. Unless you really love DIY, I’d go Stam or Audioscape for an SSL buss comp.

If you're patient, DIYRE is working on an SSL bus comp and I have no doubt it'll be a wonder kit. http://instagr.am/p/CULTAcLrh9W http://instagr.am/p/CWUBI32tucT http://instagr.am/p/CW3zupDrPnG Hairball stuff is great. Saves a few hundred from Audioscape. CAPI can't keep anything in stock anymore due to demand and supply issues. Hard to find that stuff. JLM kits are great too. DIYRE OLA5 compressors are on sale right now for today at DIYRE too. They are pretty cool funky compressors. Great on bass and guitar. Really anything as its an opto. A SB4000 kit I'm not sure you can still buy, it's a hell of a build though.

I’ve got a list of projects a mile long. If you want them, I can get you them for a little cheaper. They’re basically untouched.

what would you choose or any other options that should be included. The 160vu can be really cool on bass, snare and kickdrum. Try feeding small amounts of both the kickdrum and the bass to the same compressor and blend it in with the raw tracks. It'll glue nicely if done correctly. On the other hand, an ssl type compressor will give you a lot more options.

You might want to check out the SPL DynaMaxx as an afford VCA compressor. It has some unique functions.
