Which VSTs? Be sure input monitoring is enabled on the track and track is armed. (I lower fader/mute the track because I monitor analog style and don’t need slap echo)
There are some tweaks I’ll do to channel meters so I can see the noise floor, which isn’t shown by default. Also some downloadable themes have awesome options, in the heat of the moment I forget which themes and options.
For Calibration, try JS: Reaper Frequency Spectrum Analyzer plugin. Click on the Text in upper right, FFT: increase it to see more detail. Floor: I’ll drag it down to -300 to see where the bits end. Excellent plug-in! I wish it showed Left/Right traces, but it’s still great.

Reaper just gained a bunch of new metering options in recent updates.
For plugs, I like to use the PSP triple meter gainstaged for vu 0 around what plugs Im using. Or use the meter in the plugs. I like the PSP for the true peak behavior.
Klanghelm VUMT is good too. So is Waves VU. Waves has excellent needle movement but I don’t know if it goes by the samples or estimates the true peak.

Reaper track meters for me are just to make sure I'm not clipping.
The master meter I set for RMS loudness. I put an L1 limiter as the last thing in the chain and set the out ceiling as -0.1db.
When I mix I try to get the RMS to around -11db with the L1 barely twitching.
There's absolutely no reason to worry about calibrations or whatever. Just don't clip the channels or the output and you'll be fine.

For calibration, I mean visually seeing where noise floor and how loud the harmonics are being introduced at different gain staging levels. That plug-in is awesome for that, along with the tone generator. It’s mostly for when I print to tape, but also good for stereo loop back through gear

im really liking bx meter set to k20 for mixing. am thinking of metering tracking levels with it.
to do that would i load it in as an input fx and turn off monitor for the channel as i'm monitoring audio via focusrite zero latency.
