Definitely one of the most entertaining ones!
Looking forward to the new boy band. I see a lot of potential.

Very good!
I did think the videos were just for show and he had recorded closer as you could hear plosives now and again.
I agree with him about favouring the Stam. I have 2 and use them a lot.

I'll take your word for that more than a YouTube video! The sound on youtube is NOTHING to trust!! But . . . anyone else find the audio on some of the mics was extremely exaggerated? I have bunch of 87s and the Seranno and other Neumanns and Neumann family mics. None of them are as sibilant or 'crunchy' as what I heard.

I didn't hear much difference. Might be Youtube compression, but honestly it's probably that the mic differences just don't make much difference in the context of the mix.

That's kind of what the video proved. Once you do a ton of processing (and make no doubt there is a lot of stuff happening on those tracks) the differences become more subtle. They are there though.

This is great.
Stam sounded the fullest. Warm the brightest, R0DE the dullest, the U87ai had more detail than the Stam, but less midrange weight. The Stam and U87ai were my favorites. Either could work. The Stam would most likely work a bit better on a more sibilant voice. U87ai worked better in the busier mixes. Just my thoughts.

that was my take away too. all the mics sounded great. some better than others in some situations but all very usable.

Yeah, I'll take the Stam here, with the "weightiness." The U87Ai was also great, if a tad thin. The Warm sounded kind of wrong, and compared to the Rode NT mic, you might as well buy the Rode between the last two.

Loved the Q and A! I also liked the Stam the best of these four.

This was one of my favs a few years ago.
I'm not proud to admit that after watching the vocal performance comparing the two pre's in this video, that I had to click on the youtube link itself just to read the comments for the entertainment value alone! That part of the video may rival William Shatner does the song "Rocket Man" for me

HA, I lost it at Neumann's paradise.. He can sing as well which is cool.
As for similarities at one point I was into VCA's / Daking Pre's and relied on the characteristic of the mic. Then I moved over to a Shelford / 2A and unless the mic was inherently rubbish (brittle HF / excess distortion) a lot of mic's came out of the tumble dryer smelling the same. There are of course subtle nuances but not really enough to care.
Great if you like the sound of that chain, not so great otherwise. It's probably the reason at this point the whole Neumann, high-end mic space is a bit lost on me.. Not that I've haven't at least tried / owned / used quite a few of them.

I thought this was fantastic. This is quite hard to do, and takes a long time to record and edit.
First, show some respect, for once the vocalist can really frickin' sing, hallelujah. I listened on my monitors and the Stam and the U87 are in a different league. The Stam is clearly based on the original U87 and the Neumann is the new and available U87Ai, which was a smart choice. So it depends on your taste and the tracks, but both of them were killer. I'd take the Stam, but the Neumann was great too, just a little different. People call that "modern". To me "modern" is just more high end which I rarely want or need.
The other mics had so many issues they're not worth discussing.
