He runs an old school studio where they use real instruments instead of midi.

99% of plugs I bought because they just copy something else and sound and behave worse. Big exceptions for Tokyo Dawn and U-he for pushing the envelope in ways that analog gear designers have not responded to yet at all! There have been only a couple of analog pieces to even do anything better or new since their fx came out. And they’re not popular in favor of the millionth vintage clone.
Most “good cheap” monitors not Yamahas. I used the JBL 305 for one record as an emergency backup and they’ve been sitting on the floor in a closet in the boxes since. The rest were mostly given away or sold for peanuts.

I am always walking through the garage to get the car out. Pretty standard stuff so far.
And there is the mountain of boxes of music and studio stuff that I know I really must do something with.
Well I had a few days holiday and we bought a Treadmill so now I need to make room for it in the garage for it when it arrives. So hence the cleanup order has been issued by the better half.
Low and behold I pull this piece out of one of the boxes. Clearly if I have not used this in 20 x years I am never going to use it. I wonder how many Expresso's I had that day when I bought this thinking it was going to change my world??
But you know how it goes, you tell the wife "I really need this for the studio" or "This is going to be so useful" or :How I am I going to get on with out having this" Maybe you have said to yourself "I am not really a real studio if I dont have this particular piece of gear or instrument".
So whats your piece or pieces of gear that you have bought that you never have used?
I loooooooove autoharps, zithers, plucked/strummed piano strings, etc. Beautiful sounds can come out of those things. I actually spent a day last year scouring the web for autoharp VIs + Kontakt instruments and found some pretty cool stuff. I always have my eyes peeled for them in antique shops and yard sales. Don't sell it!

I've bought "vintage" Quad Eight and Electrodyne stuff over and over again, and never wind up keeping it. Throw Sphere in there too. Just ordered some reissue Electrodyne gear, fingers crossed. I'm a sucker for Quad Eight anything.

I remembered another one : AKG 414b-ULS. Bought one brand new waaaay back when. Never used it. Thought to myself "I should have a pair", so I bought another thinking that if I had a pair, I'd use them. Never used em. And when I say never, I pretty much mean never. Then I thought "why do I need a pair of something I never use - I'll sell one." So I sold one. Then never used the single. I ended up trading the last one to Stayne @ InnertubeAudio for partial payment on a U87 Innertube amp. That I use a LOT. B-ULS's....not so much. He harvests the capsules (Nylon ring) out of those mics for his Innertube Mag Light flashlight mics.....so I guess they're good for something.

Silly me. All this time I’ve been using midi cables to trigger fake instruments in my new school studio. In '94 everyone said you better be ready....still ready.....never once had need..... There’s a huge, fascinating universe of sounds that can be made with midi programming, and daws, Max4Live, and gui librarians nowadays make it easier than ever. A lot of the gear with midi inputs from the past 4 decades were only being used for their presets. That unused midi cable is a road to a place you (and maybe no one) have never heard. Sonic spelunking!

My entire studio recently, I'm beginning to think it's just a showroom.

My entire studio recently, I'm beginning to think it's just a showroom. Ha! I saw the title of this thread and was about to post almost 100% of what you just said, @soriantis . I guess you beat me to it. In other words... Same. Ditto. Exactly.

I hope you get back in there soon.

Handsome Zulu - A covid buy. And now a covid sell. I just do not need it, especially with SB1 and SB2 on its way.
