Was just hanging out today recording my 94 y.o. grandma. She attended Oberlin in the 1940s for violin. She just plays piano now at 94. Writes little pieces. We record them once a year or so.
She's got a vintage Knabe mini grand that was built around 1900. It needs a good bit of work but it sounds pretty good when it's freshly tuned.
Last year it was the Hardy pres and IAA pres with my Aurora(n). I have the UA x8p now for mobile, so I decided to make use of it.
TLM 170 spaced pair in cardioid placed a little outside the crook/curve angled slightly down. ORTF KSM 141 omni pair in the room.
No mixing done other than panning, pulling the room mics down and delaying them 15ms.
Settled on the v76 preamp in UA Console. It just shaped the sound in a way I liked. Made me feel more connected to the music.
I won't ever see 94, but even if I did, I wouldn't be able to still play this good ha ha.

I am impressed. While I liked your posted, I am not agreeing that you will not reach 94 and beyond.

Well, don't wish TOO much time on this planet on me, now... ;-)

This sounds beautiful man. Your grandma is an outstanding pianist. I think it's really admirable of you to record her, and it's so awesome that she's still writing original pieces at 94. Lots of respect for this.

Lots of respect for this. Thank you, thank you! She really is something else. A lot of pedigree as a musician her whole life. We make a fun hang out of it and I feel lucky to have the skills and equipment to offer something like this to a family member.
I really think writing and playing keeps her going. I hope she does many more.

Lovely piece. It actually has a kind of epoc sound to it, like it was composed long ago. You could drop this in to a movie scene about the 20’s or 40’s and it would set the scene nicely.
Nice crispness to the recording too.

I don't have time to listen just now but, what a wonderful thing to be able to do. The legacy of grandma's piano will live in your family forever.
