Just curious how former/current Zulu users, think about this device now? Thanks, Chris

I think mine sounds great, but my big gripe with it is that it reacts VERY differently to different rigs, so when i use it at home then take it to my studio for recalls or tweaks, the sound changes so radically that it becomes unusable. So I don't really use it much at all anymore.

can you even buy one? I thought there was some sort of grab and dash crap that happened?

So I don't really use it much at all anymore. I experienced something similar. I got one in preorder. Used it and liked it. But it reacts very differently depending what your feeding it and what comes after it in the signal chain. I got tired of fucking around with patching different preamps, di’s etc in and out, before and after the Zulu. Especially when my RND’s 542’s sound equally as good and are so much easier to recall and to get usable settings out of. I quickly sold the Zulu and don’t regret it at all.

yeah, i'll probably sell mine in the nearish future. it's been a pretty long while since i fired it up, due to it being pretty much impossible to move it from studio to studio with consistent results. That just doesn't jibe with my usual workflow.

I haven't either. I have a faint memory of another stereo rack mount processor he was going to make too that I was more interested in. Jull? Julu? ju ju? something with a Ju in it. But doesn't seem that that's a thing.

Yeah, he announced a rack-mount version with active electronics and a few other things, plus a different box called the Juju. There was also a bundle you could buy for both together. It was advertised that it would come out I think in January of 2019. That came and went and nothing materialized. As more and more time went on, it became clear that this wasn't going to happen, but they took all the money upfront. I had ordered the rack version because I thought it was coming within a month or so. He ended up offering people 2 or 3 regular Zulus in lieu of a refund, presumably because that money was long gone. I asked for one Zulu and cash back and he asked for a few weeks to get the money and then thankfully I got that and a Zulu. Much like the things people are saying here, I ended up finding it very strange to integrate into a system because of the wacky gain staging and I didn't think it was worth the headache, so I sold that on Reverb.

I didn't use mine for a long time but recently put it back in the 2-bus chain. I dig it. I have it on super mild settings. If I try to get more overt with it, I stop liking it across the mix, image collapses a bit and I lose detail. On the very mild setting I use now, it just softens the highs and imparts a pleasant kind of cushion. With this setup, it finally beat out the tape sim plugs I was using in its place. I do also like to get overt with it on individual tracks, it can be lots of fun. But it's a quirky, passive device to be sure.

Thanks guys, for your feedback. It's too bad the device didn't work out as well for some, as intended. (Let alone those who may have lost $$). Chris

I was a pre order.... and I think he used one of my songs to promote it...
I sold it off when I sold off my hardware....it was an interesting box... and at the pre order price, I think it was value...
cheers

I was pre-order
I used it pretty much on every mix on 2 bus or drum group in my hybrid summing for a couple of years.
I went ITB late last year and now I use it on the way in for OH or kick/snare.
I was up for getting a 4-way or 8-way rack version, perhaps with a 2-knob configuration for settings… but I don’t see that happening now.
Its a good box and I’m sure a MK2 or rack version could have been even better.
Its very difficult to start up a company, in any area and audio is no different. In particular supply, components and hardware build are hard. Being caught at a very exposed time, second product launch, when governments did what they did as a pandemic response must have hit hard.
I haven’t followed the pre-order thread on the new product so I’m not in a place to comment.
If LUNA gets hw inserts going soon, I’ll likely hook my ZULU back up on the 2-bus.

Zulu is now the only piece of analog gear I own, and own two, so that probably shows how fond I am of it - its the type of tone and compression I had generally been unable to achieve ITB.
That said, on the last batch of mixes I did, I was using in in parallel as I wanted a little more detail in the final mix. An unrelated tech issue forced me to approximate it with software, and I ended up using Saturn 2 in its place. That ended up working effectively enough, at least in the parallel situation.
The ability to adjust the headroom while keeping clean tone is something I really enjoy about that piece. And like folks above, I had it squarely on the two bus for a while. Nothing changed in the functionality of the piece - it was more of a change in what I was wanting to hear coming back.
So, in spite of the issues surrounding the company, I still really enjoy the Zulu.

Cool thread. On a semi-related topic any love for the JJ Audio microphones in 2021?
Finding those mics was a big inspiration for me. I decided to do my own similar-ish builds, after seeing what was possible. I know Langston had some involvement in that company, too.

I’ve got two Zulus here. I use them while mixing on certain tracks. Usually nothing before Zulu and then straight back into my DAW. Occasionally I’ll patch comps/EQ’s after it. Sounds great. It is not replicated by anything else I own ITB or OTB. I really dig it. If I run something through it and it sounds better, it stays on the track, if not, I don’t use it, Just like any of my outboard gear. It’s not a magic bullet, but when it works, it really works nicely. It has helped tame a lot of nasty bright tracks here over the past few years.

Like Wiz, I sold when I downsized. Otherwise, I’d still use it.
