Since it's all anyone wants to talk about these days... Cutting harmony vocals here at home with the GOAT.

Yep , did a female backing vox 2 days ago and the 84 worked beautifully. Cheers, Ross

I’m pretty sure that Josh Groban’s first few albums and Christmas Album were all cut with him on a Km84 for his lead vocals.

Bob Olhsson mentioned this a few years ago. They used the 84 on some Motown records, including some Marvin Gaye tracks.
I tried it once, and with a pop filter it worked nicely.

From the behind the scenes video of his Christmas album he was really close miked. So my guess is you're right.

The KM84 is an amazing tool for those who are fortunate enough to own one. But until if and when Neumann reissues the mic it's basically unobtainium. Or put another way, the KM84 is realgearoffline.

The Black Keys did all the vocals on one of their breakout albums with a KM84 pointed at Dan's forehead.

Not quite the forehead but I'll aim mine down to the mouth from at least 9' away rather that directly on axis, to minimise 'plosives - they're very touchy like that.
Cheers, Ross

I did a ton of vocal work with an MK-012 at one point.......
......the other day I was overthinking some BGV's, then I put up an RE20 and an SM7....and they worked.....
: )
Pretty sure I'll only be owning a KM84 with a lottery win or a lucky yard sale score.

One of the best sounding things I ever recorded was a friend of mine sitting in a chair, playing in a guitar and singing, with a MK-012 pointed roughly at the midpoint between his mouth and the guitar's sound hole. I think the Oktava is a perfectly fine vocal mic. I'd love a pair of KM84s, but not at current prices. Regardless, I think MK-012s are great, regardless of price.

My KM84 came to me as a KM85i. That capsule has a gradual bass roll off starting at around 400 hz, which I’m told makes it great for vocals. I will try it one of these days, but since I put the KK84 cap on, I haven’t changed back. Why? Changing capsules on a KM body is nerve-wracking! At least for me. The threads are really fine and when I did it, it felt like it would be very easy to cross-thread the cap on the body. That would be a disaster. So I am reluctant. Tips and tricks gratefully accepted.
