I put a fair number of new pigtails on microphones, and over the years I've used the Neutrik NC3MX-B (black gold plated), and more recently, the Switchcraft AAA3MBAUZ.
Both are of quality, but am about at the reorder point, and thought I would ask if there are others that I should be considering.
At present, RCA 74B's tend to get the most new pigtails, if you are curious.
If you have a favorite XLR male cable end, would love to hear about others I should consider.
Regards
Jon

Jon The first thing is there is no standard for the size of the pins of an XLR so pretty much anybody can do what they want. There are Neutrik fans and Switchcraft fans you won’t change either. What I would probably do is call your distributor and see if they will give you the quantity discount even if you split the order between the 2. Now in the world of Covid you might need to be a bit more flexible because of supply chain issues, also remember Neutrik in particular has a billion SKU’s they do not produce all of them at once so stock might make your choice for you.

I've always felt that I've been on the "outside" of the industry, in that I'm not hooked into distributors. This is on both the supply and demand side. Buying 10-20 connectors doesn't qualify as quantity to me =)
For the products I've manufactured, I pay retail prices, just like y'all. I may get a quantity break(what, you don't buy 1000 switches at a time? =P ), but pay what is listed on websites.
Most of the guys I know in the boutique pro audio market are in the same spot. Presently, a lot of product designs are being done backwards. You buy the parts, and design the product around the parts you could buy, rather than designing the product, and then sourcing the parts (which may have unreasonable lead times).
I do shop around, but ya, subject to availability.
Although there is no official "spec" for XLR, I largely haven't had issues with compatibility( at least in the 30+ years I've been doing XLR's).
I don't have a preference for these XLR connectors, my interests are really just high quality for my customers.
Regards
Jon

Regards Jon I always want to like Switchcraft connectors more than Neutrik, but I've actually had a few Switchcraft XLR connectors not fit in a few inputs, whereas I've never had that happen with real Neutrik connectors. FWIW.

I've had problems with knock-off Neutriks and a very few Switchcraft XLRs, but never with official Neutrik. I'm SURE there are folks out there who would say the exact opposite. My first piece of Pendulum Audio gear did not play nice with Switchcraft jacks. Which is of course what Greg Gualtieri supplied his included cable with. Haha.

Yep. They seem to do just fine from what I can tell.

Personally I like the NC3MXX series connectors. They offer an optional color code system with boots and rings which is nice if you need that. They also did away with the cut out lock and now have a notch etched in the barrel for the locking mechanism. The cutout used to where out and break on the NC3MX series. I use the XX series on all my custom cable builds.
