pretty much everything I hear on any streaming site is 95% mixed mono these days? Is it just me or is my system malfunctioning? I can't tell an ounce of difference in mono check and stereo, theres not an ounce of difference. Still sounds good, just saying.. I'm talking about the new music coming out. I'm wondering if studios are mixing to Iphones these days? What's going on?

Mono translates better to headphones and I’ll wager that 90% is mixed at home where the speakers are pretty tight against the IMac so there isn’t much separation and they learned this just doesn’t translate well to either headphones or a well set up stereo rig. Better safe than stupid?🤔

Listening to Inhaler's "It Won't Always Be Like This" as I type. Definite difference in mono vs. stereo. EDIT: Also just checked "Saudade (When We Are Born)" by Olafur Arnalds. Also big difference between mono/stereo. And Agnes Obel's "Myopia" (probably my favorite album of 2020) almost sounds like a different set of songs in mono vs. stereo (check the title track, for instance). But hey, we may be listening to wildly different material, cowboycoalminer .

They’re not even on axis in an equilateral triangle using speaker where the drivers blend together at the listening distance. They’re mixing on headphones and usually some useless cheap, big, and flabby scooped monitors. Good luck telling them that the JBL LSR 308 is useless and the 305 is better and cheaper despite being useless in the low mids.
Only thing usually recorded with a mic are the vocals and usually poorly with some nasty condenser.

I'd be questioning how you hear stereo because I do not have this issue and lots of stuff is very stereo heavy.
assuming you mean big studio mixed stuff as noted in the OP from big labels from big artists.
Small time indie artist...who knows.

I did have a client send something to mix they'd done themselves, standard pair of hard-panned acoustics in the mix, one break it drops back to one guitar on the intro section, then both, then it all comes back in. They didn't like the hard-panned single guitar (!?!), and it's such a standard. Only listening on headphones.

Must be your Apple hijacking the audio, like it does. Who are you listening to? I seem to remember some big imaging shifts in Olivia Rodrigo. Was the last Dua Lipa gonna show this? Or are you listening to Nashvegas….stunff?

I have not heard this.
We have two ears, and I'm going to always mix to use both, lol.

...puh puh....is this thing on...?
What were you listening to? Did you find that indeed your interface's mono switch was engaged? I really am curious about trends in sonics...being a geek...we obviously don't listen to all the same music...so, what were you hearing?

I’ve checked out a lot of references the past couple years, and yeah it got very common esp with new stuff that when I flip to mono almost nothing changes in the main elements. Stuff I thought the reverb was panned a little, or guitar / tambo little, nope! Straight up the middle.
I think it could also be mastering, since budgets are low, mixes probably need help. That could mean a hard panned say acoustic needs scooped mids, but opposite side keys needs more mids. They could eq each side very differently as long as they narrow the MS width way down in the end. This works for me on my own crappy mixes anyway. But there should still be ‘some’ elements that are obviously stereo in headphones.

That's one more reason for me to keep the little ME Geithain RL-906.
They just work in a lot of situations and translate pretty much the same, even more in combination with SW.
