Hi guys, looking for 4 pencil condensors for an all male 12 piece choir who can't get used to the sm 58 paradigm and want to work up to 2 feet off the mics and just move in for highlights. One omni mic or a stereo pair need too much juice with a choir positioned so far off them and are hence subject to feedback ime. it's a choir raising money for charity so there's very little money . The important factors are; the mic's 'reach', price and sound in that order. The Rode M5 is incredibly cheap here right now and sounds fine on youtube clips but ive no idea on it's reach. Feed me your thoughts please. Cheers, Ross

Did try a good deal of china SDCs with exception to the 3U audio ones. I sold them all.
The Octava MK012 are loved after I found the right one. Russian QC is not so great. In many cases, I prefer the MK012 over my KM184. For 180 bucks, it's a fair deal.

I would look for either the AT or Shure subminiature hanging mics with a stand adapter and a very tall set of stands.

Km184. Mk012's are good but I don't find that they have the tone for distance micing.

Reach isn’t a thing. Patterns are a thing.
Oktava are far too uncontrollable in the bass unless you have good adjustable filters. The hyper capsule will be the brightest and have the least bass, that’s a fact with bass that follows pattern, but then hyper may be problematic with closeups unless the rehearse placement.
This mostly sounds like an exercise in judicious and strategic monitor/mains arrangement.

Yeah that’s part of why I was thinking the Subminiature Choir mics, they are pretty much known to anybody doing this kind of PA work, are fairly monitor friendly and the pattern was designed for this type of work. The key to what he is referring to as “ reach is height. You want them high enough that the mic as the origin your choir position creates an arc. Any mic except maybe PCC’s on the floor is going to be to close on stands to create that arc. Personally other than some esoteric SDC’s my trick was the AT’s and 2 or 3 PCC 160’s on the floor. One thing with Pcc160’s the super cardiod pattern isn’t quite symmetrical, one side as wider Super cardiod notch. It also has some strange peaks in the notches so they can take some work to position. Doesn’t everybody bring there own PCC160 to their wedding or is it just me.
