Just a thread to say that I really like this thing. I’ve kind of settled on the 9000J and the N for channel strips. Couldn’t find evidence that we’d ever talked about the N here.
Anyone else dig it? I’ve had it for quite awhile and my ear always kinda pulls me back to it.

Haven't used it in ages, but I like it. It's got kind of a big round sound to my ears. Good for rock material. I thought the UAD Neve 88RS had a better compressor, but Console N was better in most other ways, the EQ and so on, the tone. Some people have said the THD algorithm is the same in several of these bx consoles. I wonder if dan might know. Whatever it is, it sounds pretty good. I've gravitated more to the SSL 4000 E as a general reach, I guess. Kind of a bog standard sound that works for me. Use it a lot in my drum template. If I ever end up owning the Lindell 50 (API console), that one is likely going to end up on a lot of drum bus tracks. Used it on a few Superior Drummer sounds and it took me somewhere.

I believe the N and 4000s are extremely similar distortion wise. The 9000 is its own thing but still close to the others. N gives you some Nevey curves though. Guitar The Focusrite is definitely the weirdest and most unique with over 100% thd in the low end. Use it with a high pass filter for some cool sounds. I like the Focusrite and the Lindell 80 bus distortion the most. Yeah the bus is cooler than the channel strip imo. What I haven’t been able to get a good sound out of is Neold Big Al. It just sounds like a less crunchy Vintage Warmer to me. New thread time.

Talking simulating analog artifacts?
There is a Soundtoys Sale running. I always thought that the Altec Mixer simulation from the 50s sounds outstanding good was a bit steep at 129$. So I let go to pull the trigger.
Today I got Radiator and little Radiator for 24 Euros.u
I just forgot how good the Radiator sounds....
I watched my racks again, and I know which one goes next.
Sounds just amazing 3D, bigness openes.... just like great hardware. My guesswork is those Altecs were cheap designs... who cares... NICE.....
Plugs just get better and better and the Radiator is not new right?
It's like with hardware, some companies have the know how to the right thing....

Didn't want to hijack the thread, the Neve by PA does not sound like the SSLs.

i hate using channel strips, but i do appreciate the THD on the bx SSL G I have. only played with the Focusrite a little but maybe I need to revisit?
honestly, if i'm after a channel strip, i usually just grab the Scheps omni channel - it just seems most flexible to me and i don't hate the comp as much as the others I have (aforementioned and the UAD Vision and 88RS)

Focusrite is definitely good, has something special about it. I had good luck with it on some clean guitar and vocals, although I'm sure it must be more versatile than just that.

Dirk has a response on GS which confirms that the saturation/THD algo from the SSL consoles was retrofitted onto the N because 1. it wasn’t originally modeled with the saturation, and 2. Dirk claims that the distortion on the original desk was not very good to begin with. I don’t know if that’s the case for later BX Consoles.

I'm always super happy to know behind the scenes facts and truths, about gear. Plugins are a pandora's box of this stuff. The more we know, the better, IMO. Same thing with microphones, their components, supply chains. The truth is out there!

You can just clip off weird stuff in the high end and turn it into fat low end while the typical tape plug just saturates it out.

Uff so I was wrong... since when Neve artifacts sound bad? Sounds to me like a cheap excuse...for not doing the work......and gives me doubts about his ethics, because they claim too to model every detail....

Pushing a board that was designed to be crystal clean hard enough to clip it can very well sound quite bad.

This may have been covered in this thread already but the console_N is a "neve" but it's not the classic Rupert Neve Neve (like an 8068 or the Lindell 80/Softtube British Class A in plugin form) we think of as having desirable neve artifacts. The console_N is a model of the modern, clean, Neve VXS from the late 90's/ early 2000's www.mediaandmarketing.com/13Writer/Reviews/MIX.AMS-Neve_VX-VXS.html
