Yes they are. They’re awesome. I can’t compare them to an actual tape machine but it doesn’t matter. They’re excellent regardless.

I recently spent a couple of weeks comparing different outboard tape simulators.... the Neve 542, the Handsome Audio Zulu and the Sound Skulptor TS-500.
Just going through every video/audio comparison that I could find on the internet.
Ultimately, I went with the Sound Skulptor and am very happy. The Zulu looked like it would be a gain staging hasssle although I thought it sounded great. The Neve was more expensive than the Sound Skulptor. So I decided to give the SS a shot.
The TS-500 is killer. Very versatile/tweakable and sounds good on literally everything I run through it. Below is a link to the in-depth video that convinced me to try it,... might help you.

Maybe a stupid question, but what happens when you run your signal through the 542 multiple times? Does the emulation extend into ping pong recording and it’s accompanying sound degradation?

Those of you that have them, where do you run them? Master buss, drum buss, individual tracks as needed?

Those of you that have them, where do you run them? Master buss, drum buss, individual tracks as needed? All of the above. I track with it on guitars and vocals (sometimes). Sounds great on guitar busses. I almost always mix with with it on lead vocals. Gives the vocal a thick weighty sound, and I usually print that. And I often use it on master buss, depending on the song etc. It all depends how hard your hitting it. You can definitely over do it but when used mildly it almost always makes the source sound better.

I wouldn’t say “degradation” but it can get heavy handed. You can push it into distortion, which can be cool too sometimes. There’s 3 saturation sources in the 542. The tape electronics, the silk blue transformer and the silk red transformer. You can push each separately and each had a distinctly different sound. It’s one of the few pieces where it really helped to read the manual. It’s not a complicated box but can take a few days to wrap you’re head around.

I built a TS-500. Really wanted to like it because of its features and design philosophy (I was designing something similar myself when I found it), but in the end the TS-500 didn't do it for me. Rather than applying a compression to the signal and bringing out room and detail in drum sounds, it seemed to have a gating effect and do the opposite. The head bump was a bit excessive too, in my opinion. While adding distortion and lows, I thought the box made things more lifeless-the exact opposite of a good tape machine in my experience.
Beside my own drum recordings, I ran some of Paul Godfrey's drum samples through the TS-500 and got the same result. When he used the Bereich03 density on the same samples, they sounded incredible to me.
