I need a new Mac. Mine is doing all sorts of crazy things, it’s time and I was waiting for M1X...ugh! What’s a good MacBook Pro recommendation to run my studio setup on, of course using hdmi output to a bigger display. i9? i7? Heard so many things. I plan on using this to do Logic X/ProTools/Studio One 5 Professional.

just wait another month or so. The new MBP come out this summer. It'll be worth the wait. The fact that it won't have a loud ass fan alone is enough to make me wait. And more IO.
Just hold out a bit long.

I agree with Blackdog the new mbp 16 inch will be very powerful and quiet. Do you have a problem with running big Sur?

Was hoping for an m1x mini over here but may go the mbp route of it looks good on spec. I'd wait because they are just around the corner and should launch this summer. I believe the larger iMac m1x might be a thing soon too.

Still on an old 2012 i7 mini and MacBook Pro, upgrading computer, and looking at I/O for outboard. Mojave is what I am staying on for now, so everything works
I’m trying to wait it out...I have an old Xeon 1.1 Mac Pro! It’s a great powerful iTunes Player👍🏻

If it helps I replaced my maxed out 2015 MBP with an 8 core 16" MBP late last year. I can run sessions on it that make my 12 core 2010 MP with HDX sweat. In general just really happy to have something so powerful with me when traveling. I'm very interested and know the new Apple chipped MBP's will fly but this one is no slouch.

I've got the six core version and yeah, there's only so much power one needs especially for audio.

The Intel macs certainly worked well but problems were heat and the fan noise.
The m1 has neither of these issues and m1x or m2 with the additional cores etc., should provide significant processing jumps over the m1.

A couple hundred at a time? It takes something intense for my MAC to start getting hot and blaring out like compiling a million lines of C++ etc. For most audio tasks it's barely ticking over, a 20 channel recording and a few VSTI's / plugs wouldn't phase half decent hardware from a decade ago never mind what what we have today. Of course audio drivers have a decent part to play in this.

I'm in the same place as a few others, using a 2012 i7, trying to make it to next year giving the new Apples and 3rd party's time to settle in.

@zarconis, the two issues I was reporting on are typically reported on the net.
Running my own sessions here on the m1 mini it certainly seemed apparent that everything loaded more quickly, then my 2012 mbp i7 with ssd.
I understand processing load is related to session demand, bu that doesn’t alter the fact that the new m chip soc architecture is inherently more efficient then the Intel design.
The m2 or m1x series also offer more than 16g of ram , a potentially limiting factor with the m1.
It will be interesting to see the price points of the next gen macs.

It actually works really well. Only reason I want to upgrade is just to speed up procession time and ability to not have to freeze as much. But it’s absolutely amazing we are still using 9 year old computers.

I'd wait for the Apple silicon. I have the M1 13" MacBookPro, and I don't use it for music (still got the trashcan MacPro,) but it rocks as laptop, runs about all legacy software as fast as intel, and the fan has never come on for anything.
When I used my 2014 i7 laptop for a DAW, I'd put it on an icepack when I'd record acoustically so the fan noise wouldn't ruin the take.

I’m still using my mid 2012 MacBook Pro but now I’m looking to do more ITB mixing (with analog master bus inserts) a Mac Mini M1/M2 looks interesting.
Apart from the increased speed, the expanded I/O of the Mac Mini is definitely a plus over the newer MacBooks and I can even use my 65” 4K TV as a monitor!

Yeah, well I beat you out Rowmat ( its an Aussie thing) - mine is a 2010 MBP still running Snow leopard (hang in for another couple of months baby) which has been stupidly stable but will be consigned to internet duties when M2 / M1 X is proven reliable. They'll sell a heap methinks.
Cheers Ross

No issues there, if investing in their own architecture nets us users a grand improvement over intel then I'm all for it. If nothing else it's more of a reason to stay MAC. It's just I don't think I'll be upgrading from my 2019 MBP for the next five years at least. The primary purpose of my MAC is general surfing and audio which in my experience because I'm not recording or mixing orchestra's it barely breaks a sweat. Although.. And a big although, I wanted to use this as my everything / do all mobile transport machine and when I'm doing a bit of work in other apps it does tend to melt a bit. I did offload the GPU to an EGPU but it still gets pretty hot..

I was having issues with my 2012 MacBook Pro with Luna. I updated Luna recently and it’s actually working for the second time since Luna hit the market. I haven’t updated on my 2012 Mac mini, however it has never run on my Mac Mini, won’t even load, it just sits and spins. Funny thing is they are the same computers, same i7, same SSD drives. Just a different chassis.
