For a many years, this was my preferred kick mic. I had two break in that time. More recently, I typically use other mics - often condensers. But I just had another one die. Pretty funny, since the entire 3ish years I've owned this one (new from Shure at the time), I have barely used it.
I have had an odd SM57 die, usually from handling/dropping and had a 421 go bad once. I've been recording more or less for 25 years. Have any of you had mics that just repeatedly die on you?

Audio d6 is the only dynamic that's died. Solder issues internally.
Only condenser I've had die was a gefell m930 after a close lightning strike.

I've never had an issue but now you're making me nervous. I lost my Beta 52 in the most recent home move and after 5 months of looking for it finally gave up and bought a new one last week. That thing was alive and kicking (pun intended?) for over 20 years. I assumed the new one would last another 20.

I've heard of a number of people breaking Beta52s by putting it in a bad spot (due to the size). That weird spot makes it really susceptible to big air blasts coming through the hole in the kick head.
I think that spot is where the capsule is right in the sound hole...all that air is trying to escape at the same time and being funneled through this small hole and rushing by the capsule putting a ton of pressure on it.
...other than that I've never heard of anyone actually breaking a kick mic.

I had one break down, naturally on a gig, but on the plus side, in the soundcheck. "Why does you kick drum sound like a spark?"

The original couple of years of Beta 52 production was really bad news, but aside from the early years don’t remember seeing many 52’s. I do remember everybody wished the Beta57 grill would have worked on a SM57!
