Thinking about learning a little lap steel especially in C6 tuning. Any decent ones that won’t break the bank? I don’t mind spending some money but would want to stay under a grand.

This is one area I'd suggest getting a cheapo, at least until you later conclude you'd like to commit more time & effort to the instrument, or not. Could then later use it as an alt tuning option.
For that reason I got the cheap rogue which isn't all that bad. I then later got a 2nd rogue to have as another studio tuning option. The 2nd one I got has a humbucker and is a mother of pearl body different rogue model. Seems to be a rare version option but still cheap. I do prefer the humbucker one though.
As cool as the better quality more $ options are, it's only great if it actually gets much use as opposed to only once in a while in my case.

We can sound like him together 😂 LOL, just had the same conversation with another friend that “obviously” the way to get Tom Petty’s Wildflowers acoustic guitar sounds would be to buy the $10,000 Gibson Wildflowers signature guitar with no consideration for the mics, engineers, and the room. |

I bought a vintage Magnatone from the 50s on Reverb.com. It cost me around $350 about 7 years ago. The good thing about a lapsteel is that there’s no wear to worry about!

I'd recommend either an old Gibson or a Magnatone. You should be able to find either for $500 or less.
OTOH, if you're really serious and can afford it you should consider an 8 or 10 string, which is what the pro players in the '40s and '50s used. Around double the cost, if not more, but you can do a lot more with it.

I got a cheap Recording King lap steel. Swapped out the tuners and the P90 w/ a Lollar I had laying around.. Then added some Certano benders on there. It sounds really good.
It’s in open D.

Magnatone? I have a 1948 Mag with mother of toilet seat covering. I absolutely LOATHE it.
But that's just me. I have friends who have tried it and say it's the best thing ever

It’s lower than on a ‘regular’ guitar but I wouldn’t say it was necessarily too low. I’ve actually been swapping pickups on the SX to try and find what I like. The stock P90 is noisy, so I swapped in a Gibson P90 to see if that was any better. Just as noisy. I don’t remember having this much noise trouble with P90s in the past. Overall I like the sound of the Gibson P90 a little better. If I raise it up, the SNR improves. I have a Burstbucker 2 in there right now. Certainly quieter but I don’t like the tone as much. I’m considering one of Lindy Fralin’s hum-cancelling P90s. I really do like the P90 family of sonics for this lap steel. Sounds right to me, just want to reduce the noise. |

FWIW, I ditched the screw springs and put a thick chunk of foam in to keep the P90 up higher and it's sounding good with the Gibson. |
