Been a rough year in the audio world already. But this one hurts.
Probably the best audio engineer of all time (is in my opinion) and just all around great guy. I wish I could have met him one more time. His sound has inspired me for years and no one could ever do it quite like him.
RIP Al.

Ahh damn. Thanks for the records, Al. And, quite literally, thanks for the drum sounds.

So sad, such a legend.
I attended a drum recording workshop in LA with Al and Uli Frost - watching him work all day was an absolute thrill. I literally didn’t eat that day so I didn’t have to leave and miss anything. RIP

That's a sad bit of news. I always appreciated the basic quality of his tracks--always the right mic in the right position in the right room. If it was acoustic music, it sounded like it. If was to be more produced, those basic tracks could stand up to whatever processing was needed. I met Al a few times, including once or twice at Capital. Besides his skill and care, he could get very salty in his description of things. Decades in L.A. and he still approached things like a New Yorker.

What an incredible legacy. Some people you can just listen to them talk and it's like getting PhD. Think I'll spin Crown Of Creation today in his honor. RIP, Al.

Rip Al. I didn't realize he was 91! He seemed so dynamic in some recent videos, I assumed he was like late 70s.

I had always hoped to work with him one day. I figured out at one point that many of the albums on my reference mix play list were done by him. So, I based a lot of the way I mix around how he worked. Thank you for the music sir!

My mom knew him (and Sam Cooke).
Al (along with Sam's producers)...
Gave us our first Sam Cooke LP, when I was little. Chris

A true master. I thoroughly enjoyed his book, and his videos!

He was 91 years old. That's a long and full life. Probably way longer and better than I'll end up having, so I choose to feel happy for him rather than sad.

Now I can use EQ during tracking again? RIP, Mr Schmidtt. Sure-you'll know you boosted too much when you feel an almost imperceptible breeze and the hair on the back of your neck stands on end

Rest easy, Al. I really love his work. Even though I knew he was older, he seemed so spry still. The news is sad, but what a legacy. Thanks for all the music, Al!

Sad day indeed. I’m just glad that there was time for him to share his wisdom with so many via YT and other courses and interviews.
Seemed like a real class act in a business that sometimes doesn’t have enough of that.
RIP Al.
