Anybody have some other cheap funky lofi mic suggestions they like?? Certainly not cheap and I wouldn’t call it lofi but I love an rca 77dx when I’m looking for “vintage” character. Cheap and “lofi” I would echo others suggesting 635a. Or a 421 with a little distance from the source.

Though yeah not cheap! I actually have some Beyer M260s with RCA ribbons and it gets me close! Very cool sounding mics and relatively cheap. Yep, I already have the 635a and I love it!! I'll have to try the 421 with a little distance, I only use it on the occasional heavy guitar. It usually sits in the mic closet. I can imagine how that bite the 421 has could work to give an agressive edge to the sound.

If you're into DIY maybe you should try using some of these cheap and small telecom transformers with limited bandwidth. They can be 1:1 or 1+1:1, etc. Just a thought really ...or get a copicat

I like the little cheap omni condensers, I use JLI capules and the P48 circuit, they're a little funky. Something similar "on the market" would be the shotgun shell mics from 12 Gauge Microphhones. Or the Little Blondies. Or maybe some Clippy or Pluggy mics from MicBoosters.
Not sure which cassette software you use but I like Sketch Cassette II and also Klevgr DAW Cassette in series with that.

I have a friends who's got the SS one. I'll see if I can borrow it

Realistic Stereo Reverb System analog BBD reverb....it has a 1/4inch mic input. Sounds pretty lofi to me! Plus you can add delay to your recordings on the way in!

A Copicat is always a good idea. You can run it 100% wet for a tape effect as well, and then move back the delayed sound. I need to try that!

Shure karaoke mics for a garage feel. Shure SM57 with pop filter. Those cheap ribbons Thomman sells. CAD mics.

Not sure about cool sounding, but an old metal trick was to use cheap behringer mixers as the preamps for metal guitar cabs. The relatively lo-bandwidth nature of them would smooth the fizzy tones right down.

Have you tried Transformer based preamps driven into saturation followed by a bandpass filter. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This. Many of those cool lo-fi records made in the hands of professionals are actually using pretty high end stuff, but driving them into distortion vs. lo-fi 80/90's pro-summer gear. Whatever gets you down the road....

I can list dozens of incredible records made with "real lo fi gear" or whatever you want to call it. Just for an alternate perspective.

I forgot my main trick for 50s gear driven into distortion lofi is a Berlant Concertone. 50s tube pre from mono tape machine. You can find em on the bay for about 100-300. They need a lil modding but drive into distortion beautifully. You can see one in Sean Everett’s rack in his mix with the masters vid (I haven’t watched just noticed it from the trailer) and I swear I can hear that distortion on some of his productions (war on drugs, Alabama shakes)

Thanks guys for all the great suggestions. I have tried quite a few of these options, guitar amp, driving the tube pres and none quite get me there though they sound great and I love doing those thigns. I'm demoing a cassette emulation plugin and it sounds really close so I'm thinking a lot of what I'm missing is just that Cassette sound, the wow and flutter. I'll try to see if I can grab a cheap Zulu, or I might try to get a Portastudio 246 and see how I can fit it into my workflow but it seems a little overkill for something that is really more of an effect that I'd use sparingly There was a tape emu that I saved for creative purposes... had to go find it, since my work doesn't often lean that way. It's called CHOW Tape Model. I saved it for a lo-fi and weird effect type of stuff that is sometimes fun. Perhaps that's helpful to you.

What comes to mind from my experiences:
The V672 preamp: I loved these things. Its been a decade since I had them, but I bought a pair racked for about $800. I loved them with a 57 on guitar amps, and I even thought they sounded great as a vocal preamp if it was a rock tune. I think they were something like 40 hz to 16khz but had a really thick low mid and mid with lots of harmonic distortion.
The Shure Green Bullet doesn't have to be distorted (you can dial to back on the mic itself) but I think it is awesome too. Really bandpassed and compresses like crazy.
An in spite of all the issues the company has experienced, I love my Zulu's. They can sound clean and tight for sure. However, I really lik starting with an overall clean sound but lowering the headroom a bunch to force into compression early.
This is just one idiots opinion, but stuff that comes to mind when I hear your question. Interestingly, in spite of all the gear I have bought and sold over the years, I still have the Bullet and two Zulus, and have looked around for V672's since selling them (of course)
