Interesting video showing the 4K digital restoration of the original 35mm film of INXS’s 1991 ‘Live Baby Live’ Wembley Stadium concert in front of 74,000.
The restoration makes it appear very contemporary which is slightly surreal as Michael Hutchence has been dead for almost 24 years.
Apparently 16 cameras were used to film the concert.
The YouTube audio on headphones is not so great with the lows sounding muddy and indistinct and the solos somewhat distant almost like a surround sound mix not converted correctly to stereo.
Has anyone seen this in 4K?

That was freaking fascinating. That made it feel like they filmed it last year. And what a killer band.

That is really cool and I'm glad they've restored it but, and this is a testament to how badass INXS was, I really wanted them to quit #$%@ing around with the damn comparisons and just let me watch the good version. Such a bitchin' track and Live Baby Live was a tape(!) I copped from my older brother and wore the living hell out of. INXS was a seriously formative band for me, very early on, as a kid. Such a unique vibe.
I've never seen the whole film, but that is one of the best live records I've ever heard. The multiple, increasing levels of crowd pandemonium at the start (when the band members are coming out on stage and they go into "New Sensation") gave me chills as a young wannabe rockstar and it probably still would.
Edit: just checked, yep, still chills

Hard to believe the footage is 30 years old. Would not have looked anywhere near as good if they had shot it in 1991 quality video. Hutchence was a mix of Jim Morrison and Mick Jagger on stage. The entire concert was doing the round of the theatres last year but I didn’t see it advertised here. Probably because of COVID. Trailer for theatrical release.

The first time I saw the Stones, about three songs in it suddenly occurred to me, "Oh..shit, there is a LOT of Jagger in Michael Hutchence"

Yeah I guess he did kinda cop that.

A great rock band in its prime is a thing of musical beauty: just watched a bunch of inxs clips, they rocked! YT just cycled into original stone’s Sympathy, a live version with Brian Jones, Bill on bass, and keefer on his 3 humbucker black les Paul, everyone in very colourful bell bottoms: the sixties were cool! Oh it’s Rock and roll circus, there was a clip of Lennon dancing

Hutchence got involved in an altercation with a taxi driver resulting in a brain injury. He lost his sense of smell and taste and according to those close to him he suffered a personality change after the incident.

The restoration demo was interesting, and the flip side of ragan's take, I thought it great they didn't interrupt the song performance or continuity to show off the tech. They want you to watch the whole concert after seeing this. Also got me thinking what other historical video could be enhanced to almost contemporary quality.
romat, thanks for the post and the additional info on the band and Mr. Hutchence. After that video, youtube invited me to watch Bowie performing "Heroes" from a Berlin concert in 2002. I did, and I finished it, thinking of what Paula Cole said in 1997, where have all the cowboys gone?

It definitely shows the advantage of shooting the concert on film (especially 35mm) back then as the quality of video was not nearly as good as it is today. Being able to scan each 35mm film frame at 4K is leaps and bounds ahead of something like the 480 video res quality that would have been probably the standard in 1991. It makes a great case for good quality analog!

I’d play it a lot more except for worries about fragility (the tape itself AND the deck). Just listened to it again, tempting fate,, and love it just as much. Thanks for drawing attention to the film. Looks really good!
