I was thinking of the neumann U47 fet mic as an all arounder, bass amp, guitar amp acoustic guitars, some female vocals was wondering if anyone has used one and has some input for me?

Yes! I like it better than the U-87. But if you can go for it, the U-67 would be better.

I never felt the need so much. And now especially with the price? No thanks. A U87 is a much better "all rounder" here. The only place I'd really be wanting it for is Kick drum and/or perhaps low brass (tuba especially). Beyond that, there are better choices IMO. Yeah, I know they get used on a few classic rock vocals... If I DID find the need, (and I may for kick at some point), I'd be looking at the Heiserman or perhaps Chad's FET 47. Just my opinion.

Personally, I wouldn't pay $4K for the Neumann — I'd rather spend that kind of money on a high end tube mic or some nice outboard. That's just me, though. If I ever get the itch for a U47 FET again, I'd be totally content with the United FET 47. I had one for a while and it's an absolute steal for $800.

Big U47 FET fan here. Maybe too much AC/DC (Bon Scott era) vocals, listened too. Chris

Well I have owned a U47 FET mic and honestly it was not my favorite and I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it or even a clone again. At around 1000 - 1200 USD used the Gefell UM70 is such a better mic. I also prefer my U87 when it comes to all around usage.

I'm a fan of the 47Fet. Great on all sorts of things. Don't own one but I have an M147 which is kinda similar... sounds more like a fet then a tube 47.
Would be interested to check out the United. Was one of the few things at the last NYC AES show that made an impression on me from just talking to the guys & impression of build quality. One of my buddies bought one but he's only had it for a week or so. Will probably get my mitts on it sooner or later.

I’m not anti 47 FET, at the price Gefell UM70 , Heisermann or United sure do look like bargains and that’s the thing with the 47fet there is always somebody who thinks it’s a 47.

I tried the Neumann U47 FET reissue some years ago and didn’t care for the upper mids and slightly spitty sibilance as a vocal mic.
Unlike the transformerless U77 FET which has the cleanest artefact free sibilance of any LDC I’ve heard.

My friend loaned me two U47 FET's. At that time I only had a Blackspade UM-17R. It's kind of a cross between an M49 and U47. My wife was singing, we tried both U47's, and she said, "give me my mic", meaning the Blackspade. She was right, the U47 FET was a dull affair. No wonder it got relegated to the kick drum. It's perfect for it, and bass too I would guess.
I haven't used one in that context yet myself, but I sure wouldn't think of it as a vocal mic, I don't care who used one for vocals. Paul Rogers used an SM57 for Bad Company records, so obviously something unusual can work on occasion. But generally, a U47 FET is not the workhorse all arounder a U87 is.

I use a FET 47 all the time but really wouldn't be able to justify the current price.
It's great on kick, bass. I actually love it on Marshall 4 12s, it gives me a really classic, agressive sound and it doesn't have to be blended with another mic. I agree that I've heard it sound great on hard rock vocals, no 87 honkiness, just the perfect cut to pierce through a wall of guitars. I don't really record that kind of music and for what I do, I do find that the 87-67 family of sound works better.
I've recently found that I like the tlm67 much better on kick for my tastes, it gives me a more mid focused kick sound compared to the FEt, think Neil Young Harvest.
The online demos of the UT47 sounded ok but it didn't sound as good as the original in the soundonsound shootout I thought.

I'm biased towards it the 47 FET style, having a bright voice. Better match than U87ai.
Starting from scratch, UT 47FET or Heiserman would make a fine choice. Also darker 87 style, ala Vintage 87/Beesneez/Sorrento tuned "dark". Chris

I was going to say something similar in that I’ve been looking at the Neumann U47 FET since a friend of mine started posted really nice sounding videos with it. I am really interested in Heiserman’s take on it, but I keep thinking for the money I could grab a pair of UMT 70S, which have multiple polar patterns to boot. Still...

Damn that’s an omnivorous vocal! Did you have anything to do with that Ward? I absolutely love those MG mics! There is this omnivorous liquid flowing magical realness to the source with these mics! Every time I hear this mic it makes me want two again! Dammit!

In my somewhat limited experience, I have not come across a better outside kick mic. Paired with a 91 on the inside.

That goes for a lot of mics. Well my meaning was more that the Neumann costs 4000 dollars. Even the clones are in the same price range as the UM70 which we've been discussing. Telefunken ELA M251's make great tom mics as Jeff Pocaro proved. Their price makes them a waste of resources used in that application
