Greetings, headphone phans....
I need to add another headphone amp. Has to be rackmount. History:
Behringer: I went thru two of theirs many years ago. By "went thru," I mean each one lasted 2 - 3 years and then channels started failing. Eventually sold both on ebay for parts. I did like the flexibility of the design tho.
Rane: I currently have a Rane HC6 that I bought used at least 10 years ago after the last Behringer died. Still going strong; never an issue; sounds great with good headroom.
I'd be OK with another used Rane, but all the ones I'm seeing look like they all saw action in WW2. I'm also a bit leery of their proprietary power supplies (with the network-type connectors) since I think they're no longer made.
Therefore: Of the current crop of available rackmount HP amps (Presonus, ART, and any others), what do you like and why?
TIA, -09

I've had the Presonus HP60 for around 10 years now. It's still rock solid.
Things I like:
1. It gets loud 2. It has a "more me" function that a lot of other amps don't have. 3. It's $300 price 4. Line level mults on the back 5. Dual A/B stereo inputs, with a mix knob between them. It's useful for click tracks.
Things I don't like:
1. Headphone outputs on the front, but not also on the back. I realize the headphone outputs on the back thing is kind of rare, but I still wish it had that feature. 2. I wish it was 8 channels instead of 6.

I have a whole stack of Rane delays lacking the PSU's, they probably just go to the landfill since they're worth very little anyway.

Thanks, Quint. HP outs on the front is a dealbreaker for me. I have a kind of Three Stooge-esque brand of physical grace and cables coming out of the front of a rack = more tripping. Nope.
I appreciate the info; thanks again. -09

I appreciate the info; thanks again. -09 My solution was to run right angle TRS from the outputs on the front, and send that to the back side of the rack. I just run the snake to the back of the rack via an opening under the HP60 that I have there for venting the unit below it. That way there wasn't any trip hazards.

Not technically rackmount but it fits in a 1ru opening with room to spare. The Little Labs Monotor is amazing. I use a little velcro to keep it in place

I have the ART and it's working well for me, other than the pots have got scratchy in only a year. My big thing was having an aux input for each channel, so I can send individual cue mixes to those that require it, or a simple board mix to those that want that. I'd buy another one... probably. nothing else I looked at did what I needed. I've also got a passive headphone distribution from the Dangerous Monitor ST. I like the sound of it better but I burn up pots too often, thus the need for the ART. I also have a home-brewed Rane headphone amp. I made it years ago. worked very well but had a slight buzz and I never bothered to trace it down. Maybe someday I will get back to it. Tons of clean power.

I have a MONOTOR too and it’s amazing. They make a rack kit that holds 4 of them (actually 4 of pretty much any of the little labs pieces) It’s overpriced but I got one on reverb for like $50. I think the rack is an off-the-shelf product from Lansing Instruments or, at least, I was looking in to those as a solution when this deal came up so I stopped before finding the model number. Their site is somewhat of a nightmare to navigate/understand but they have been really helpful and responsive when I've emailed them

SM Pro HP6e, or the current brand of this called the AKG HP6e (same thing.)
6 headphone amps, with "More Me" knobs, will blow your head off, built pretty well, sounds really good. Not expensive.
You can do four separate sub mixes "artist mixes" and choose for each headphone amp.
Love this thing.

I am running the ART and it works. Lots of flexibility. Only issues I have with it is it gets hot and it can sound thin with some headphones. Plenty loud though for full band tracking in the same room.

Which ART model do you have? I was looking at both: headamp 6 and headmp 6 pro. artproaudio.com/product-category/headphone-amps/Many thanks, -09

I have not had anyone complain unless I was overdriving the input, but there is master level meters and meters on each channel. I drive direct sound ex-xx, Sony's, and Shure 940's no problem. My deaf drummer/singer songwriter friend is the only one that goes past 12 o'clock.

You can send several different mixes. The sound is loud and clear. There's also an integrated talkback that you can footswitch on and off ( you just have to by any trs footswitch, I got one for like $10). It's very solid, surprisingly heavy and seems like it'll last a lifetime, mine is 5 years old and feels brand new.

I used a Presonus HP 60 for years here without any complaints from clients. Still use it if I need one on location.
