Have any of you ever heard an open baffle speaker? I'm considering building a pair of speakers for home stereo setup and came across a pair that has the woofer sectioned from the tweeter, but the top of the speaker box is open, covered by a grille.

I've heard a bunch of esoteric hi-fi types, all of the flat baffle or hinged wing variety, most of the 'no crossover' or simple 1st order filter to the tweeter (if any) only. Following the rules, the size of the baffle defines the bass. The hinged types do interesting EQ's when you change the angles. None make 'real bass', many are very listenable.

Technically some of my favorite speakers fall into the own baffle family, but they are all large scale di poles. With typical dynamic drivers the low end is very disappointing and imaging can be very strange. I would not go down this road without a chance to hear the design first. Lots of decent kits out there for a simple vented 2 way.
