No shootout is perfect, but I thought this one had a good variety of mics people might wonder about for vocals.

thanks for posting this. Nice variety of mics, liked how he did isolated vice context. Especially enjoyed the outro where his Audioscape 76 is prominently displayed.

I think they make some of the best comparison videos. And, the microphones I own/have first hand experience with match up with what I‘m hearing in this video. That a good sounding 77DX (I’ve heard some shitty ones!) the Soyuz tube sounded nice as well
That JZ Microphone is the dud of the group for me. Didn’t sound good solo or mixed.

I thought the JZ sounded a bit too clean when isolated, but it seemed to sit nicely in the mix.
There were several I liked. I liked all of the Soyuz just fine.
The SM7B was really satisfying. Maybe not the best, but considering the price difference I thought it more than worked.
I'm noticing the comments on YT keep bringing up a preference for Neumann 103, which kind of surprises me.

Overall i enjoyed watching it and listening to it. I am one of those people that have had a love hate relationship with the tlm103 and when i heard it solo ed i thought thTs why i hate it and then in the mix it sounded better (not the best for me) but it really sounded good in the second part of the guys singing where he screached out that higher part and then i thought that was the best sound of any of the mics i that particular part. I did notice that the guy singing in the 77dx seemed to enjoy it as he dug deep and gave a growl in one of the singing parts i never heard in any of the other mics. That 77dx sounded pretty much spot on to my one. I did find the JZ a little thin and boring and it sounds like my one that sits new in the box unused for a few years. But it did translate well in the mix. The bomblet did the job nothing great or bad there. The su17 did have a similar sound to the bomblet but more weight to the sound. Shame he did not have a u87 or u47 variants to try.
It was an easy to listen to fast paced you clip that you could sit down to and enjoy while drinking fresh pot of coffee. Cheers for posting.

Very informative video! I was surprised at the differences between solo and mixed. I'd make completely different choices based on one context or the other. Any of those mics would be a good choice, really. The JZ was surprisingly good in the mix.

I'm not sure who on this board follows this YT channel, but I've watched the past three or so videos, and he's been using this same artist/song for those examples. His voice is great and the tune grooves, so like you said, any mic from these would work. But it is interesting to hear the mix with the different ones, as far as the mix sounding more retro or modern. I'd be interested to know which one they went with, because the mixed version sounds great. Of course, there's other processing on it, so it'd be hard to call out which mic from here.

I usually hate mic shootouts. But I liked how that Lewitt sounded.

So no, it's not surprising at all. They like the 103 because it's (relatively) cheap and they can't hear any significant difference.

IMHO the TLM103 generally, is a better VO mic. Unless you're doing heavy Processing, in a Modern Genre. You know all that EDM stuff, that John E. digs. Seriously, Ty Ford sounds great on the 103, for example. Chris

[/quote] Agree entirely!! I put up the Heiserman H47T capsule comparison with youtube links here more for proof than anything else, but offered the raw files to EVERYONE. Because youtube heavily messes with the sound. It can even make an SM7 sound like a real mic. That's witchcraft.

I thought the Soyuz big gold mic sounded good here. I'm listening on headphones though. Also agree that Ryan's shootout is more satisfying than a lot of stuff you find on YouTube. Good cinematography, good performers, etc.

Interesting. It's a very well done comparison. Contrary to some of my friends here, I find mic shootouts like this one to be helpfully informative. This shootout corroborates some things I've been saying here for years. The Soyuz 0-17 (and 0-19) are outstanding. The Lewitt is a great bargain, professional quality, and honestly sounds better than the 414's it's similar to. The SM7b is a decent alternative on a budget. The Neumann 103 sounds good here, but I know in person it's kind of brittle. The RCA was nice, not as sweet in the track, but I can see it on stringed instruments and maybe BV's.
The demo lines up with my personal experience. I've used quite a few of these mics, and they sound just like they sound here.

Hello older thread!
I just found this, and was surprised how well that 77 worked. It just sat right in there, nice and smooth. A little EQ would make it a standout.
I thought it funny how the video host said at the end that he was surprised by the 77 and couldn't decide whether he loved or hated it ;-}

I'm just bummed that I consistently form my opinion of vocal mics based upon first impressions of a singer's voice without the context of a mix. For me the 2 mics I like the least sounded the most "radio-ready" mix-wise. And those were the JZ and TLM103. Both mics seemed to occupy a similar band range with the right amount of presence.
