Probably around 800-1000$. I'm doing pretty well on my 6 year old I5 though, so maybe a few more years before I feel like I should preemptively replace it.

Same ballpark here, $600-1,000 depending on if you can reuse parts, etc. I'm talking about building your own PC, which is what I do.

For the last 15 years, I've used studio computers I've built (3 x PCs-last one I used for almost 10 years). Recently we purchased a refurb HP Z800 with dual 6 core processors and 24G of ram for less than $500. We added our own hard drives. I am really loving this computer!! But, I am old school, and cheap, Ha!! I'm still on Pro Tools HD 10.3.10 (HD6 in Magma Chassis).

Maybe 1K for another mac pro 5.1 there is no way that I will buy one of the overpriced new macs. Hell needs to freeze over before I buy a mac screen and I need to pay extra 1 k for the stand....

I've been an Intel user for some time now, but since AMD has finally built a chip that can beat intel in multithreading, I'm thinking AMD for the next one. 300$ for Ryzen 7 3800x 200$ for motherboard 100$ Samsung 970 evo NVMe SSD (OS drive) 200$ 2x WD black 2TB HDD (data drives, possibly in raid) 200$ Power supply 50$ video card Reuse rack chassis. So about 1K or so, but often there are bundle deals and the new Ryzen 4K series will have integrated graphics.

Performance below 128 buffer will suffer. I would definitely have built a Ryzen PC if it wasn't for this.

We'll have to see what the next series performance looks like to see if it's any better.

But I am happy for more competition in the marketplace.

Amy mac guys here taking the big plunge....to the mac pro ? I bought the latest MBP 16 "with a little extra a few months ago. Completely crazy portable studio. Maybe not the optimal one in the big studio (regarding the fan sound). At the same time, it is easy to put it in an insulation box with ventilation. But it can handle as much as preferably without the processor even showing that it works. It costs a some €, yes. Delivers it without hiccups .... Ohhhh YES!

TIA, -09 The truth is that I got it out of the trash at a place I worked years ago. It doesn't have any markings or brand on it. Sorry. It's a 4u chassis so I can fit my DSP cards straight up in it.

I also have a 4U that has been trusty for years, ARK I think was the brand, about a hundred bucks. These brands come and go though. It seems like there are some nice newer options when I've looked lately.

My needs are extreme low end. So around $200 is fine, when the time comes. Either new Windows 10 laptop... Or refurbished, from Discount Electronics. I have an 11 year old Toshiba Satellite/Windows 7, I record with. Still going strong! Chris

Fortunately Tony, you do such excellent work in both the recording areas, and drumming... I bet it'll all work out great. Chris

This is my mind set too...
I don't have to go for the latest software all the time. I wasted a hundred of hours with every mayor update because it was full of bugs. It feels like I am a useful idiot for Apple Inc. to report their bad work. Not to forget to mention its wasted lifetime.
Now I see myself using lesser plug ins than before because a small desk is coming again....
I don't see myself investing in software unless they make a big step forward again.

My NEXT computer budget? On my schedule, you're asking me to predict a 2028 purchase? I'm not sure I'd bet on my needing any kind of recording device in 2028. Given the work I've done with this two year old build, I could make an argument I didn't need a 2018 build.

Eventually my loaded Westmere Mac Pro will bite the dust and I will buy a new cheese grater. So, I'm told it's going to be $25K to get beyond where I am now.
<sigh> that Ford better last me another 10 years! (cross referencing my last post to GW Lee on WHat's the latest gear thread)

ericn, now you're on to something! Somebody has to do something like it! I mean more and more are using some kind of DSP for their own plugins and low latency mixers so why not just run the whole thing in the interface on DSP? Yeah it seams like a step backwards but just think how easy support would be! Plus you could go wireless and the IPad would just be your display/ controller. I know live guys who are running shows completely from the IPad so why can’t we bring it to the studio ?

I don't have any cards, so a 1U rack case could work. Kind regards, -09
