I’ve been looking at a pair of ward Beck m460 or m470 . I read the m460 are down 1 dB @20 and the M470 are down 1 dB @30 . Also looking at RCA ba71 pres anyone here have experience with eny of the units ? other suggestions? They seem to had for a reasonable price . The WB are around 1300$ a pair with eq and the rca about 999$ per channel. They have all been recapped and racked . I’m lookin for old school color ( insert your adjective of choice ) I’ve read the physical difference but looking for real world experience, opinions. Edit : just to clarify looking for something old school 40’50’s that’s not commanding vintage prices .

EMRR (Doug) seems to be the RCA baXX preamp expert around here. Touch base with him. I think there is a guy Gruning Audioworks that racks these up as well.

Definitely hope Doug jumps in love his projects . I thought I read where Doug said at one time there were a lot of old school gear out there that wasn’t commanding vintage price but just as good . Yep Gruning Audio is where I’ve been looking

Much of what you’re paying Gruning for is bells and whistles. Do you want/need bells and whistles? Anyone willing to skip a VU and use outboard phantom and pad will save a LOT of money with ANY vintage gear.
Anyway, I have eventually for sale (11) BA-71B’s, a rack with (2) BA-31B and (2) BA-33B, a rack with (2) BA-43A, and a single BA-33B. Haven't gone through any of them yet.
I was not impressed with the Ward Beck I've heard, though it hadn't been re-capped and it sounded it: grainy and smeared.
