The C61 is the nuvistor version of the AC701 equipped C60. a bit like the difference between the C28a equipped with a 6072 tube and the C28c outfitted with a nuvistor tube. If you can find one with the original C28 capsule it might sound stellar. The C60 is the same mic as the vintage Ela M260 but with the transformer in the power supply. Original Telefunken M260 sound terrific. I guess it depends how much they want for it. A C61 with a run of the mill CK1 capsule would only be desirable if it's relatively cheap

In that case Eric I've got some Solidtubes for sale hehehe. You should think of the C61 with a CK1 capsule as a slightly better sounding version of a C451. I have 4 C451's I rarely use on anything and CK1 capsules can be fragile

Back on subject, it’s got a tube it says AKG and isn’t in the C12 price range. So the hipster with more money than brains market will eat them up. Last week it was Lomo, this week C61, next week? Those of us who tend to lean towards quality in this buisness tend to forget that we are in niche that is still as Fashion centric as the world of Gucci and and Vittion.

Ok...so are these worth the asking price? Are they just cashing in on the name/tube option? I saw 5 pairs come up for sale, Omni set, CK28 set, and ck1 sets. The ck28 set is at the top at $3400 USD.

No. I would not pay that much (though I did check out that ad and they are extremely clean). You could buy 3 Neumann KM84's for that price and be happier.
These capsule though are the best sounding SDC's AKG produced

Thanks Tim! Off topic, but hey I started the thread... Have you worked on the Matachung ELA M251 version. Very interested in building a pair, but I can't seem to find the shootout video anymore. I know kcatthedog build a pair of the C12's with your CT12.

I'm afraid that I am so busy with capsule manufacturing that I have no time for mic builds. I did build one of the first versions of their C12 that sounded good. Luckily I have an original, vintage Telefunken Ela M251E so at least I have something that sounds reasonably in the ballpark

We have 4 x C61s at the studio. 2 with CK1 capsules and 2 with CK28 capsules. I like them. I think they sound smoother than the 451s we have, although we use the 451eb quite often on hi hat or ride. We will use the C61s on overheads sometimes. They can't really take the SPL that 451s can. Now that we have KM84s and SU-013s, we don't use the C61s as much.

I have a C60 which has the AC701. I need to wire up a cable to connect the mic and power supply. As you say the C60 transformer is in the power supply and the capsule is different from the 451's which I have 4 of but 3 have kaput diaphragms. The C61 is the nuvistor version of the AC701 equipped C60. a bit like the difference between the C28a equipped with a 6072 tube and the C28c outfitted with a nuvistor tube.
