But if enough excellent 3rd-party capsules appeared, and if enough clones then appeared, and if those clones sold enough units, it’s hard to imagine Neumann wouldn’t be interested Making a serious clone is the issue. Anyone heard a shoot-out of a Warm 84 against a Neumann KM184 and thought the Warm sounded better? Compare off-axis sound? Re the 83s and 85s, a quick glance at Reverb shows them to be going for around 1K. Add in a new capsule for $550 and your not saving money You need more than just a capsule. You need the headbasket/assembly as well...well, I would want to have interchangeable headbaskets. IMO

I can’t imagine Neumann dipping their toes into that pool unless the market were PROVEN to be there for the R&D. But doesn't the market appear proven to exist? What boutique builder doesn't reference the KM84 with their SDC? How many thousands of views does RGO and the purple site get when the topic comes up? Does there really need to be market research done to prove the worth of the tried and true, one and only KM84? Imagine if Fender had stopped manufacturing the Telecaster twenty years ago, used prices skyrocketed and no one could figure out how to replicate the original. Do we think they wouldn't reissue the Tele because they preferred to be "forward looking" or because it might cost a bit more to produce? Re the 83s and 85s, a quick glance at Reverb shows them to be going for around 1K. Add in a new capsule for $550 and your not saving money. im honestly not sure that to Neumann the market for 84s *has* been proven. I mean, 5 yrs ago, how many great 67 clones were on the market? Hardly any. You would’ve thought Neumann would’ve stepped in then, right? I mean, they were talked about on GS and RGO all the time, right? Neumann didn’t step in until there were some seriously high end clones that were selling consistently. I mean, there are other variables between those two mics, sure. But if Neumann is going to re-release a mic from yesteryear that competes directly with their current flagship SDC, they’re going to want as close to a sure thing as possible. If people are buying clones in numbers, that would probably tip the scales. I don’t know. I could totally be wrong.

I've never bought one so I wasn't aware. Curious how they're still manufacturing them like that . . . just the same.
