Hey ya'll. Been occupying my free time with lots of DIY builds. I built a pair of GAR AM10 DOA's to try out in my CAPI 553F. I've had LTL Rogue Fives in them since I built the EQ's over a year ago, but I decided to try something different for fun and because I haven't really jived with them as often as I'd like, particularly on the mix buss. Before giving up on that application altogether, I thought I'd try something new. I did a quick, not too scientific shootout and found the results to be pretty enlightening, so thought I would share my test with you for fun. I chose clips from 2 unmastered songs that I tracked and mixed (they've long since been mastered and released to the public) that are radically different from each other. One is a chill pop/rock song, the other is a super heavy sludge/hardcore tune. You'll find one raw version with the EQ disengaged, 1 version with the AM10 and one with the Rogue Five. In both cases, I did a high and low boost only. The mid band was left alone for this. I matched the settings best I could given the pots are variable. I'm confident they are basically identical, but there may be very slight variances that are likely overshadowed by the overall change in vibe that I'm hearing. Anyways, enjoy! If you dig the tunes, just hit me up and I'll link you to the bandcamp pages. ROGUE FIVE / GAR AM10 DOA Comparison

the AM10 sounded like a totally different piece of gear. It jumped out as my favorite for both, but mostly on the pop version.

Only listened to the pop, but the AM10 was definitely more vintage and punchy sounding.

Well...I ABX'd and got 20% and then 40%...The mind is a funny thing.

There are some clips floating around of the new CAPI op-amp, the GAR's, , the Red Dots, the Rogue 5 and just released Rogue 6's. Interesting......
I still love the 5 & now the 6's.
6's are more vintage sounding. One small step closer to Neve.

I meant to say the R5 was also nice. Something about the AM10 midrange kinda spoke to me immediately, but switching back and forth I can’t really put my finger on exactly what, or if I imagined it. Hope it’s not all mental

This is the biggest difference I've been able to hear in an DOA comparison. It's easy to hear in the pop, the AM10 is far weightier in the vocal but it looses some sparkle up top.
I'm new to this stuff but I just built AM10s and CA-0252s today (cuz why not) and while I was soldering away I was thinking about how little difference the choice of DOA makes. Then I put AM10->0250 into my ML2s and I swear it beefed it up versus 1731->1731. I actually ordered the AM10s mistakenly thinking I was getting OA10s. Not bummed at all but now I want to try the OA10s too.

I was pretty shocked how different they are, but still weirdly hard to quantify what I'm hearing in words. It's like I EQ'd the individual tracks a little differently or something. I like the AM10's a lot in these examples. I think Im going to get some OA10s now because why not? Im curious to go further down this rabbit hole. I moved a 1731 from my lc25 to my new fc526, and put one of the rogue 5’s I took from the 553 into the lc25. So far thats all sounding nice.

Just to complicate everyone's opamp world a little further...I am pretty close to done with my take on the 70's ADM202. Its a 10 transistor discrete amp. The original used the LM394H super matched input pair. I am using the AS194H remakes which are stellar. The original used TO39 metal can outputs 2N3053/2N4037 which we also have. The amps are fantastic and have their own unique goodness different from any of the others I have heard. They will of course be in the 2520 style footprint. I was originally gonna use BC550/BC560 for the interstage transistors but switched to BC327/BC337 when the BC560 went out of print. For shits and giggles, yesterday Joel and I compare one using the same NOS 2N5087/TIS97 that we use in the CA-0252 and holly molly it got easily 8% better so that is our final ingredient.

Wow the AM10 sounds great. So many options, collect them all! I have preferred the ones out of the CAPI shop. gar2520 does it for me up until now....but going to have to hear all these comparisons side by side

is there a super thread somewhere with all of the different comparisons? because i am new here and i am ass deep in the pre-made DOA rabbit hole.
