Think it’s better to buy the newer computer than an older trash can at the similar price?

I’ve been in 2 studios with trash cans that ultimately wound up having big problems with them.
Save yourself the headaches and get the new mini.

The simple answer is this compare their latest Geekbench Scores on something like Everymac.com. The thing is though a Mini will be throttled back under extreme load if it heats up. Trashcan was designed to run at full power. Trashcan will have better video, but new Mini will be supported longer. If I were to ever buy another mini I would. Probably buy one of the these www.sonnettech.com/product/xmacminiserver.htmlFor the added connectivity and if I wanted to upgrading the video via the card slots.

My pal Ryan from the excellent Sharkbite Studios (see my avatar) wrote the tape op review of that sonnet box— very favorable review from a dude you can trust. Not sure if I’ve tracked there since he got it, sadly.

I ran a trashcan for 5 years, probably 10-12 hours a day. It was a solid performer and is much quieter than my mini. It can run under load for as long as you want and it doesn't throttle down. Over the years I boosted the RAM and internal SSD (all from OWC). The computer never gave me problems that weren't my own fault.

If only the new Mac Pro could be like $2000 less expensive. That would be great.

Build a pc and sell your soul to Micro$atan. That's certainly been on my mind increasingly over the past couple years. It would require a pretty major set of changes for me, though. Not just in audio, but in video as well. Not going to happen anytime soon.

Very tempted to get one of the new Mac Pros that are in the Apple refurbished store. They have a full one year warranty and they are discounted about 15%.

If you're up for some tech, I did this (https://www.tonymacx86.com/) and recommend it.

I have the most recent Mac Mini (not the one released a month ago with bigger HD but same specs) and threw in 64gb of RAM that I bought off Amazon. 3.2Ghz w/ 6 core i7 and have had no issues here. Was a bit worried about the heat issue from reading about it online but it actually barely ever comes on for me and I live in a generally hot LA apartment...

I am planning to upgrade from a mid-2012 MBP to a Mac Mini ... I am planning to get the i7 with basic Ram and update myself to 64Gb
I don’t do much video work but if I started I think it would be a case of getting an external eGPU
I wonder if/when we will will see a better cpu than the i7 available in a mini?

I wouldn’t count on a speed bump until 2021 at the earliest.

I’m still running a 2012 mac mini and have only recently encountered issues. That’s with my buffer set to 32ms and a track count a bit over 100. If I raise the buffer for mixing, no issues with these large track counts

A 2012 CPU might only be able to run 1 or 2 Acustica plugins, for instance. But when it’s stable and works with your workflow, then why change anything?

It has Neve made sense, when you think about it, the mini should be the starting point. If you started with the mini you could use that same basic design for laptops and IMacs. Think of the cost savings if you used the mini motherboard as the starting point for all the macs other than the Mac Pro!

I've had 2 sets of video cards replaced on my trash can, which I got in 2017. it's a known issue with that machine, and they're designed for it unfortunately. Other than that, the machine has been great, and it's super quiet, you can have it right next to you or your vocal or acoustic mics. I'll keep it until I decide I haven't yet bought my last DAW computer. I'm getting close to that though. Other than paying for new video cards, Apple service has been excellent on it, with lightning turnaround from Texas.

I was in this position last year... I had just finished a project were my mini was not keeping up, and forget about mixing for video.
I ended up with a 3.6ghz Hex Core trash can. It has been rock solid since getting it. I can actually track at 64 buffer @ 96k. I built a rack mount for it and its quieter then the mini ever was.

Think it’s better to buy the newer computer than an older trash can at the similar price? John, I've owned an 8-core/32gb trashcan for going on 5 years and it's been flawless. I never turn the thing off either, and I push it hard, running a 9gb SD3 kit and lots of Plugin Alliance stuff on every session. PT hangs every now and then, but it's PT- my OSX monitoring tools never show excessive utilization at the operating system level. If PT was as solid as the computer, I'd never have an issue. Even so, I lust for the new rack Mac Pro, but not this year. The Madness will have to stop before I make any moves.
