I'm convinced on the value of monitoring with quality headphones. It takes variables out of the equation. I record and mix alone and have no one to impress with the gear I own or use. I have some really good monitors and use them, but I swear I get better results with mid grade headphones (200-500 dollar range).
I'm wanting to go full bore on this. What do you guys consider monitoring grade phones? There's a lot of options and I have a few models in mind per my research, but wanted to pick the brains of the group.
Any practical experience with the top models out there? Dollar amount doesn't matter. I'm looking for the best option.

Oh well - reading more about it, they just calibrate the headphones but you still need the software.

Checkout the Monoprice Planer headphones.
I 've been visiting their SALE room and have replaced all the studios
with various forms of their planer headphones at an extreme discounted price.
I didn't like the Electrostatic Headphones. The planar phones are accurately open sounding, 3d like and easy to listen to.
I've now got a big box of AKGs and others.

Best I’ve ever heard are the Senn HD800. Stupid expensive, but if it’s where you’d spend your time mixing I guess they would be worth it.

Modded HD 800 and the discontinued original version of the HE-6 are the best headphones I've heard. The HD 600 and 650 are good too. Honestly, I can just "headphone monitor" with a pair of HD 25s, HD 280s, and Koss Porta Pros. I know their sounds off the back of my hand.

Dont massdrop do the sennheiser hd650 for like us$200 or something like that? Yes, I've got one of those (6xx). They usually have the drop every couple of months or so. Also got their AKG 7xx. Both always under $200.

I bought a pair about 1 x year ago. They are still sitting in the box. I have never pulled them out yet as my HD598's are still going strong. Maybe i should sell them or just hold onto them . At some stage they will get used.

If you're looking for closed-back cans, I love my Neumann NDH-20. I've been a life-long Beyerdynamics fan and have several of theirs, inlcuding the T1, but I like my Neumanns better.

After researching the forums last year I went with HD600’s and a Little Labs Monotor. The frequency balance seems close enough to my monitors. I think I could mix with them if I had to.
If I had more money I would probably add some Audeze’s but I’m too poor right now.

I own the HD 650 and have been researching what options might be worth looking into given my lack of funds. The Audeze LCD-1 seem to be a new breakthrough for their pricepoint of $300. My friend who is a ME speaks highly of their more expensive models for when he does mastering work at home, but these are much lighter and reviews are grading them comparable in many aspects. I'd risk saying they might be a better buy than a Sennheiser 800 or similar high-end piece.

Keep in mind that Audezes are super heavy, have no treble except for a grainey peak somewhere, and the planar drivers will make many things sound totally wrong and off timbre. It’s like having a pair of darker magnepans hanging off of your head. They can fall off when you bend over to change the volume.

I have the Sonarworks calibrated HD 650s and I've been really happy with them.

Checkout the Monoprice Planer headphones. Don't know if it might be my headphone amp (Grace m905), but I was quite unimpressed with those. Basically they sit unused at this point.

The HD 600 and 650 are good too. I had a buddy bring over a pair of the 600's. He did research for weeks and ended up with those. Asked me my opinion, I put em on, hit "play" and pulled em off 15 seconds later. They sounded broken to me. ?? Go figure. Maybe I just don't like headphones.

The only thing I consider is how the music translates afterwards. If I do any headphone checking or mixing, it's with some 8$ headphones because they are the ones I've used for years and years to listen to music and I know that if I like what I hear through them, it'll sound great everywhere else.
There is zero need to spend lots of money, only a need to know the result you're getting.

Audeze LCD-X are my favorite that I’ve heard, but my DT880’s are close enough to get the job done... I’d love to hear how the monoprice planars compare.

The LCD-1 is not heavy. The other models are.
