I'm looking to sum five API 500 slots down to one FOH mono out and one monitor.
Reason: Touring with a bluegrass band, and we use 4 condenser mics onstage plus bass DI. I have a 6-slot lunchbox and would like to use 5 really nice preamps that would sum down to 2 mono outputs (FOH and monitor). Carrying a little Lunchbox would make it easier for fly dates. Stepped gain pots will ensure everything is consistent from show to show. The band members "work" the mics, and we don't need anyone playing with our faders.
Radial and a few others have 19" rack solutions, but has anyone seen an actual 500 module that could do the same? I could even DIY something if I knew which direction to look.

The Purple module will work, but need the Sweet Ten rack to do it. Might shoot Cemal a note at Total Audio Control. His rack should do it as well i think and he might have a module coming out soon that will work. Plus you can get a 6 space rack from him. You could also look at the Crayne Born rack or the heritage rack which built in summing mixers. Found this too with a quick google: vintageking.com/mercury-d-series-g8-sum-it-moduleGuessing you need to use their rack though as well. Reason why is the pin outs for 500 aren't always used in racks to have the pin 7 or 9 active to do the summing. This is also true for a LOT of modules as well. So you need to make sure your modules have the right pins active and the rack as well to go to the summing card.

Looks like a rack is needed either way. This one almost does it all.

The Cranborne actually looks like a decent option for this.

Id like to know how the converters stack up, and the summing, and what your options are if you want to work with other converters in addition to the Cranborne. I thought you could do that via the Adat I/o but my understanding is that is not correct? Anyhow, sorry for taking this somewhat off topic. Cheers, Geoff

Don't want to throw rain on the parade, but do you know if the PA systems you'll be feeding are good enough to notice the difference? Studio, yes by all means, but I do wonder even for bluegrass if it will make the difference.

Most bluegrass bands on the festival circuit carry their own front end, that way it doesn't matter so much if the venue PA is amazing or horrible. The in-ears will at least be consistent and the 10-15 minute changeovers between bands can be faster.
It's a shame the Cranborne doesn't have Dante or Madi. That would be a real advantage.

Dan For what your doing I would really consider a separate small rack mount mixer if I really get what your trying to do. I have mixed a mono FOH and monitor mix via a pan pot and it’s a PITA.

Looks like a rack is needed either way. This one almost does it all. Just a heads up. These went up over $700 Canadian this week. Don’t know if they’ve gone up in the US yet, but if you’re interested might be best to act fast. Cheers, Geoff

Went from $1900 to $26 something. That’s Canuck bucks.
