Ran across this from another user who has high praise for use on vocals. He also uses Fearn vt2, useful arts sfp30, silver bullet, and Pacifica, and indicates this V672 pre outdoes all of those on his Brauner Valvet X or Horch RM2J. Anyone heard of this? Supposedly built on a vintage Telefunken V672 amplifier card with a Haufe transformer by the main guy at Sonicworld. Probably the more important question: Is a V672 preamp a good selection for vocals? www.sonicworld.eu/new-gear/e-r/preamps/961-sonicworld-the-brick-class-a-mono-mic/instrument-preampTJ

Before I clicked on the link I thought you were talking about the old Groove Tubes The Brick preamp/DI. I haven’t used this newer brick, but this might be one brick too many lol.

I had a pair and loved them (vintage 672’s). I used them on electric guitars a ton but did indeed like what they did on male vocals. Very mid focused with great harmonic saturation, but still somehow kind of lean.
Nothing like a V72. Maybe more like the footprint of an API with the texture of a Neve (but without the bloom on the bottom)?
Not easy to describe but really cool. When I bought mine back in 2009 or so I think I got a racked pair for about $900. They may not be that low now but I would wager they are still much less than the more popular vintage stuff.

I haven'tried a lot of premium pre's. But another you may want to consider is the Aurora Audio single channel Pre, for around $1100. I've been so impressed with the clips though, on the Silver Bullet, that IMHO you may want to still consider that also... Down the line, if budget is a concern at all. If/when I upgrade from around the "Onyx" level, most likely I'd be looking at something like the Daking Mic Pre One. The "Daking sound", as you may know, was based on the old Trident consoles. I'm more in the "Under $700 range". (maybe even something like a Black Lion/under $500 will keep me happy!) I hope at NAMM this weekend, they have a lot of these kind of Pre's all set up and "ready to rock". It's primarily educational for me. But occasionally my "music friends", will ask me for an opinion on various signal chains. Chris P.S. BTW how are you enjoying that ADK '251? I'm going to retry some 251 types, at NAMM and keep an open mind!

Todd, All the Telefunken V (72, 76, etc) series pres are supposed to be incredible. Mercury does a lot of great clones & there are other companies. I know the Beatles used them. Don't know why you got the responses (cRAP video) but, hey, who knows.

Get Volker over at 51xAudio to build you one of his. I believe someone makes a 51x single space rack.

I believe jeremygillespie really likes and has a few of the V672s. Although it might have been the V676.

I’ve got a rack of 6 V676’s and they are indeed fantastic.
I think I had a pair of 672’s but I thought they were line amps that were converted to be mic pres. I do recall they had a TON of gain. I used them for drum room mics and not much else.

Thanks for all of the replies and recommendations. For a while there I thought I'd "thrown up a brick". (Might as well join the fun.)

P.S. BTW how are you enjoying that ADK '251? I'm going to retry some 251 types, at NAMM and keep an open mind! I'm liking it, but still trying to get the sweetspot nailed. Have been experimenting with the stock tube, a NOS Mullard, and NOS 6072 through my AudioScape gear. I had every intention of having a recording done by now for initial feedback, but have had a little something in my throat and my voice just has not been cooperating. As soon as it comes around, I'll get something posted and I'll let you tell me if it works!

The V672 is normally a line amp that can be converted into a mic pre. I have two of them that i use pretty regularly. There are different types TAB, Siemens, Telefunken and ANT. Some are fully discrete and some have opamps.
Great preamps with massive transformers if you get a fully discrete one. Some of them have 2 or 4 outputs.
