Ok, I don’t have a lot of stereo comps and would like to add one more to the quiver. Although if a Daking Fet II came along at the right price I might just get that and call it a day.
Anyhow currently have a good crop of mono compressors but stereo I have an RNC which doesn’t see much use, and an SSL style that sits on the 2 buss but should see more use in other applications.
So there it is. 3A or diode bridge? Which do think would be more versatile. What applications do you like these on?
Purchase not imminent. I know Audioscape is working on a 3A. In 33609 land I know about Audioscape, Stam, and pretty sure Rupert has one too.
Cheers, Geoff

Do you actually see them as interchangeable? Or would it depend what you want to prioritize them for ?

I don’t really know. Never used either, so that’s why I’m asking. Want to see where others are using/ like them.
Cheers, Geoff

There's also the Heritage Audio HA-609. I just got one and haven't had time to mess with it, but I'd be happy to run some tracks through it for you as a reference.

33609
Great for rock bus comp Bass Drum bus Kick/snare
3a
Vocals Acoustic guitar Bass If you’ve got a pair they are really cool as a main bus comp if you don’t require them linked. Clearmountain used them for that application for a while.

For me, the 3a's are more "me" than anything Neve made compressor wise. They are a desert island comp for me. I don't use them on busses much though....so if you're looking for stereo buss work, maybe the Neve would be better? Not sure, they never really make me stand up and say "YEAH!" like a 3a can.

There is but one correct answer.
BOTH!
In all seriousness though I think the LA3 is much more of a Swiss Army knife.

LA-3A is THE acoustic guitar comp. My Audio-Scape version lives on kick. And then there's also the traditional 1176 combo thing on vocals. Great sounds. Edit: kick

I watched a vocal session using one a month after they came out and ordered one. It was like the first time I heard a U67 in high school, a complete no-brainer. I couldn't afford the 67 although I ended up buying the very same one used ten years later.

Ive just heard they’re working on one for Nammish. As for the Heritage, thanks for the offer but not in the budget with Stam and A-S around. Very kind of you to offer though. Plus my computer is currently possessed. That’s the number one priority at the moment, but is a story for another day. Cheers, Geoff

La3a is amazing. Killer guitar sound. I like them on a bus with the guitars. Bass is great. Vocals great. Drum bus too.
Don't know the Neve stuff that well. I have a Heritage Successor but haven't gotten to dive into yet. But so far from what I've heard from various other things and playing with mine is Dioide stuff like the 33609 gives a mean pop to stuff.
2254 is thick.
Can't go wrong with a la3a. But getting a pair that match isn't super easy for master bus.
Since you have a vca comp for the main bus I'd imagine this one would be used on other busses like guitars, drums, keyboards, vocals, ect. So I'd go for la3a.

My old UREI LA3as sound better than the new UA ones for some reason.

I have both. I built both of them from PCBs I layed out so I know a lot about how they work.
The LA3A is a much more simple design overall but has some quirks. The 33609 is horribly complex.
Both are class A/B outputs. The 33609 doesn't have neve's vintage ba283 class-A output driver unlike the 2254. It still uses multiple stages of transformers on the input to divide down the signal to very low levels to be in a semi-linear region for the diode bridge to operate, and then boost the signal back up to more normal signal levels.. This makes the 2254 and 33609 somewhat noisy with hiss compared to the LA3A, but it makes it pretty damn fast as a compressor and limiter.
The LA3A is a bit more slow but it's smooth and less "grabby" than the neves. It's more of an RMS leveler where the 33609 can hammer some of the peaks of a signal.

For you guys who use both, would either one make a good all-purpose bass compressor? I’ve been eyeing an LA3A or 535 for tracking bass guitar.

I’m going to guess that even if the same OEM is winding them to the same spec, there have been just enough changes to sound different.

For the record, I've got their 76, 4000, and V-Comp as well. Incredible sound and amazing value. Plus, excellent service. Had an issue with the meter on my 3A last month and they shipped me an updated part pronto. HIGHLY recommend Audio-Scape. Edit - had "3A" by mistake. Edited for clarity.
