Are there any solid mic pres that are relatively 'pro grade' folks recommend around 1k? I currently have stuff from Langevin, Vintech, Vintage Audio, Manley, Chameleon Labs, Lindell, Weight Tank. Looking for some respectable workhorse pres.

Looking for some respectable workhorse pres. I just demo'd one of these and was really impressed with it. Considering selling a couple of my existing channels and grabbing one of these IAAs. Designed and built by our own matt@IAA. www.ironageaudioworks.com/product-page/mic-pre-4-channels-qpp

A Warm WA412 is close to that price.

A Warm WA412 is close to that price. I was not impressed with the build quality on some of the Warm stuff I had. I ended up selling it off. Any idea if things have gotten better the last few years?

The Iron Age 4-pre box looks pretty attractive. A bonus is you can talk with him too about what kind of coloration you like and he gives you a few options. Maybe he can squeak it at your price point.
Certainly less custom than Iron Age, but maybe a similar approach is the Black Lion B12A quad. I'd bet it is decent.
I own the Audient ASP800. If you'd like to try it out, I could drop it off at your studio. I like the preamps for all sorts of things. I use them mainly with guitars and keyboards. The pres are the same on their ASP880, but I think if I did it again, I'd get that model due to the send/return options.

The wa412 seems very well built: first impressions are that it is very heavy and built like a tank. I have had 2 with zero problems.

The Aidient ASP880 has 8 pres with variable HPF and 3 impedance settings on each channel.
It has send/return and can hang off an interface with adat.
The Audient pres are punchy and cleanish sounding but for the money I don’t think it can be beat.

Focusrite ISA 428 comes to mind, used ones are around that price point. Sounds good, I use it on everything as a utility pre. Vocals are usually through RND 511, kick and snare are API, but I'll use the ISA pre's on anything else. Overheads. Guitars. Various instruments.

I picked up a Midas XL48 8-Channel preamp last year to do some drum recordings. It does well for me. I don't use it on vocals but on various drum tracks, it has worked very well. That's right at your limit and it gives you four more channels.

Don't laugh, but if it's really just at the "workhorse" level... IMHO Onyx pre's are OK. Then you could put money saved, somewhere else. I'm open to "correction" on this, if need be. Chris

Sytek, the ISA428 problems usually stem from heat (you can cook an egg on that thing) so you need some space above and below.
The Audient ASP880 is also a nice utility preamp and if you can take advantage of the ADC a big plus
Otherwise, maybe DIY some CAPI preamps? I think there are some at $250 each. If you have the lunchbox space.

Seriously, for 4 channels of beefy, transformer-based pres, handbuilt (possibly even to custom specs), what can compete with the IAA? Not trying to shill or anything, I don't even own it (yet). I just don't see much competing with that option.

Sytek. I have a pair of them; one has Burr Browns in channels 3/4. Really great for clean pres. Recommended!
