Sweetwater is blowing out Artist Mix's for $650 right now. Has anyone had any experience using one of these with a DAW other than PT?
I primarily use Reaper these days, so I guess I would most be interested in how the Artist Mix would work with that, but I'd also be interested in hearing how it interfaces with any DAW which isn't PT.
Am I inviting a nightmare by trying to use an Avid product with a non-Avid DAW?

I used it with Cubase 8 and it worked fine, not sure if that's true of 9 and 10.

Hmm, I wonder if Avid is getting ready to release a replacement for the Artist Mix.
The blowout price tempts me finally replace my Command 8, but I’m not sure the Artist Mix would be a significant improvement. The Command 8 has technically not been supported for several years but still works fine.

Even if the Artist Mix is a good product and would work well with others DAWs, it still scares me to touch anything having to do with Avid.
But at that price and if it would actually work for me.....

Any reason you aren’t thinking faderport 8?

I'm considering lots of things, Faderport included. It's just that the current sale on the Artist Mix is pretty substantial and puts it in the price range I'd be willing to consider.

Yeah I know what you mean, buying Avid hardware scares me too. It still blows my mind that people paid over $50k for an Icon and they are no longer supported. I'm still on Pro Tools so my options for control surfaces are limited. I've toyed with the idea of getting a C24. Those are supported through 2022. Pro Tools updates don't offer much useful to me so I could probably stay on this same version for another 10 years or as long as I can find Macs with a compatible OS to run it.

should work fine. Uses Eucon to do control.
I've also been told the Faderport quality is not that good compared to the Artist mix.
The new S1 is what is replacing it though so will be cheap for sure.

Yeah, I guess that, when it says on Sweetwater's site that the sale lasts until quantities run out, no more Artist Mix's will be sold because they are being replaced. Which then makes you wonder about the remaining window of support.

For what it’s worth I had 2 faderports: the 8 and 16 and didn’t have any problems or concerns about quality as they both worked perfectly and seemed well made.

It's been awhile, but I felt like I could mix faster with my mouse. For fader rides, they are usually section (chorus/prechorus etc) specific. So, I do the fade with my mouse and then cut and paste it with tweaks needed instead of riding a fader again and again every section. Things like scroll to track and scroll into view I could do faster with the mouse. Same with Record-enable, solo, mute etc. Same with plugins. I suspect that people who developed as engineers with faders and desks would feel more comfortable than I did. I developed with a mouse. So, that's my comfort area.

Like anything though, with a little time and practice you'd get faster and enjoy the controller more and more.

You know, I was just reading about some financials at Avid, and they are in such deep shit. I think that's all I needed to remind myself of why I avoid everything Avid. Sale price or not, I think I'm out on the Artist Mix. It looks like it may be being discontinued and the last thing I need is to deal with Avid support, or lack thereof. Screw those guys.

Have to redo all their 32 bit stuff plus OSX10.16 gets ride of live kernels which..well..means all DAWs are kind of fucked.

I picked one up of these used earlier this year. Only use it with PT but it's the first controller I've really liked. Nice for balances and rides as expected but one of my surprise favorite things is using the EuControl assign to have all my VCA's and busses locked after smaller internal balances are done for more broad strokes during the later stages of a mix.
