I'll be checking out the exhibit hall on Wed. afternoon. I'm really looking forward to it but a tad disappointed that a bunch of the smaller companies such as Louder than Liftoff, Locomotive and Audioscape won't be there--according to the app list anyway.

Things were cool at AES today. Not overcrowded, I got to chat with Seth Berman from RAD Distribution about the Apollo mods at Black Lion Audio, met Chad Kelly who's beginning a new association with RAD making a lovely looking U47 FET style mic.
Met the super cool cat Vance Powell and chatted about a few of his productions I admire, and had a great chat with superstar mixer Ryan West. I enjoyed chatting with Marek Stycos, the Dangerous Music rep about the 2 Bus +, and reconnected with my man at Alto Music, Dan Physics.
So it was a great day for meeting up with people. I liked the SSL Six, but have small reservations about the lack of control on the 2 Bus compressor, but I think it may just be enough to help a home studio sound a bit more finished. I'll try to get a closer look tomorrow. Avantone has a new mic that's built by hand, it's an all new upgraded CV-12 with a big nod to the C-12. I'm hoping to get a chance to try it at my place soon. Seth Berman from RAD's a brilliant guy, and great fun too. I love their built in patchbay on the BLA lunchbox. If i ever go 500 series I'd love to have one of those.
More reporting tomorrow, I wasn't feeling well today.

The new SSL console is super dope.
The new Grace m908 and m905 controller is killer
Coolest thing I've got to play around with though is the SPL Hermes. Freaking cool Mastering Insert router. Totally programmable insert order in 3 different layouts to easily A/B/C routing. PLUS two built in assignable Parallel processors! Stupid cool box. Plus all SPL mastering stuff runs at 120v! Headroom for days.
Also got to watch Stevie Wonder mess around on the new SSL console. Dope.
Met Morten Lindberg, good god that guy is cool and by far making the best natural recordings I've ever heard in 3D. So good.

Stevie Wonder? I don’t understand how he can operate a console, especially a new one. Was he mainly listening?

Nah had a friend walking him around. Sat him down in front of it and he was pushing faders.
He has his own studio. He knows what he wants. I took a photo but PITA to get on here..
Anyways there's an article somewhere talking about his place and how its just a room full of instruments and he knows where everything is and just walks around and grabs stuff.

Mannn- I was so looking forward to going but I got swamped with putting together the new studio (and still taking on assignments) but I’d really like to try to make time tomorrow. Is it worth it? The one thing I’m really want to see is the Daking console. I know it’s been out a few years but I haven’t yet and it looks like such an unsung hero that I should save some money for. Anything else? Discussion panels?

The one thing I’m really want to see is the Daking console. I know it’s been out a few years but I haven’t yet and it looks like such an unsung hero that I should save some money for. Anything else? Discussion panels? I talked for a while at the Daking booth about their console. Unless my studio situation radically changed I'm not really in the market for it but was intrigued to hear their pitch. It's not a console with modern digital "improvements" but more of a throwback in a new dependable, solidly built package. I have one Daking 500 pre and for certain things I really like it. (LOVE it on pedal steel) I think Daking suffers from not being in one of the convenient "American" or "British" pre camps sonically, so some people don't know how to listen to it if that makes sense. I asked why they've stopped making the 500 series products (because I'd like another pre) and they said they had to cut corners sonically to make them and that they just didn't sell well.

Anybody that went by the Daking booth, do you know if the Fet II compressor is coming back?
Thanks, Geoff

I always thought the Daking was supposed to be the Trident “sound”.

I always thought the Daking was supposed to be the Trident “sound”. I think the pre and eqs are based on the A range. And presumably the consoles. Not sure what the genesis of the compressors are. Cheers, Geoff

Yeah, branding really has people completely twisted. If it's not a derivative of Neve or API, folks are not going for it. Silliness. There are so many well designed gems out there. I wore Toughskins when I was a kid while others wore Jordache who's the fool now. Haa. But for me. the A-Range is certainly a holy grail piece. Sonically. The times I've used a Daking I felt that I liked it even better because while I love vintage thickness I appreciate fidelity. And I don't know if it's just newness of components or circuit differences but it definitely has it. My experience was on the rackmount channel strips. Anyways I missed today's AES because we were setting up a new full on metal shop here. Stoked!

An old co-worker had an extra bus ticket up, so I couldn’t resist. Good times to see some of the latest gear and have a few nice conversations with some legendary audio gurus.
