Curious to know if any users around here of the Spectra Sonics 610?
Are you using this for utility (clamping transients to get better performance of gear down stream) or for color (smashing drums and things)?
I saw they have a new version C610, in addition to the V610 which is a slightly different beast. Anyone use one yet? Been on my radar for a while, but haven't been able to hear one.

I have an original 610. It's a great comp, will do pretty much what you want it to. It's a really fast FET comp and is capable of being utterly transparent or of smashing the hell out of things, depending on how you set it up.

I have an original as well, and I concur with what John said here

Something worthy of note is that Spectra Sonics is pretty much the same company now as it was back in the day, run by the same people. It's not a "Zombie Brand" brought back to life by new owners who purchased a trademark and the "rights" to intellectual property.

They seem to have had a name change to 'Spectra 1964', i guess due to those pesky virtual kids..

Ok, so looking for a compressor/limiter that really slams and can get some dirt when needed. But I also want it to be versatile enough to use it lightly at times. Already have the 1176s, LA-2As, DBXs, and a Vari-Mu style.
I'm currently stuck between: 1. Spectra Sonics 610 2. Valley People compressor 3. Chandler TG1
Any advice?
EDIT: Also wanted to add Retro 176 to the mix.

A Valley Dynamite is pretty 'dynamite'. Ok, so looking for a compressor/limiter that really slams and can get some dirt when needed. A DynaMite IS Dynamite!!! But I wouldn't really call it "versatile enough to use lightly". It will put a point on things like nothing else though.....

Would like another 610. They all do different things.
Compressors are kinda like microphones to me - you can never have too many different types. (some may not get used much, but ya never know....)

I use it to liven up room mics when I'm tracking. I don't have one at my spot though, so that's as far as I've gotten with it.

Great River's got one. But if you're in for repeats, API 2500. Mellow when kissed, trashed when banged hard.

Extremely versatile but excels at slamming. Many of our customers are using them in mastering rigs or on 2BUSS, actually..!

I'll check it out Good point from Cyrus....when is the P-COMP coming? PWM style? PYE compressors where that type right? Love the sound of them and would certain welcome a vintage pye in my rack any day.
