I decided to move this to it's own thread so as not to muck up Martin's 67 capsule thread. This is a comparison of 2 different tubes in my Stam67 with Heiserman Capsule. The tubes are a Philips EF86 and a Telefunken EF86. To me they sound quite different and I'd like to hear what you guys think. One audio file for each tube - both 24bit, 44.1. Each audio file starts with spoken word, then vocal over music, then just vocal with reverb cut in/out at different spots. You'll see the gap in the waveform where the 3 examples are separated. Chain for spoken word is just Mic > CAPI VP28 (2520,1731) > Apollo > Pro Tools. No compression. Chain for sung vocal is Mic > CAPI VP28 > Serpent SA76 (blue stripe mode) > Apollo > Pro Tools. Compression was just 2:1 to protect the converters. It wasn't doing much. Name of the tube in filename in upper left. The Telefunken vocal is pitchier than the Philips, but cut me some slack..... I was running out of time. I kind of like the Phillips tube on the singing vocal, especially in the mix. The telefunken has something in the highs that I'm not a fan of and would probably try to fix with a preamp choice or eq. Mic sounds good.

Mic sounds good. I agree with you Vincent.... I like the fuller sound of the Philips on the singing. On the spoken word I like the Telefunken.... a little more defined. I agree.... the mic sounds very good to me.

Funny, this is a very rare occasion (first one I think), where I differ with Vincent. I preferred the T-Funk. Sounded more "like a record" to me. I agree that the 67 style microphone is (very) good for your excellent speaking/singing voice though. Chris

Just wanted to add (again), there's a LOT of strong singers here, at RGO! Chris

We all have varying ideas of what the 67 should sound like.

Chris Hey thanks Chessparov... appreciate that dude I think the preferences might be split down the middle. I had a few friends weigh in and 2 of them liked the Tfunk and 2 of them the Philips. It really is a non-trivial difference between the tubes. I have a Valvo EF86 also.... and it is kind of right in between the others. I'm keeping all of the tubes!

Sure thing! Good for you, on keeping the tube options open too. I did really enjoy your singing, you've got that "storyteller" vibe down naturally. Chris

This is after like 5mins of listening, so a pretty unfair amount of time to the tubes... I like the Philips better on both sung and spoken word. To me, the Telefunken has that top end that I fear will be too much. The T-funk is a bit more exciting, but the esses jump out at me more, too. I put up a quick Metric Halo MIO Strip on the Philips to see if I could open up the top end, and yes, it took the EQ quite well. I did a hi shelf at 10k and then I also gave it a little tiny bump at 250Hz, which gave it a nice, slightly chesty-ier sound. Sounds really good, NoTomorrow ! Thanks so much for doing this!

Hey thanks Mark!.... glad it was useful to you guys.
I'm gonna try some EQing like you did.
Thing is, my AML 1073EQ just showed up at the door.... so I might need to do some more recording instead of mixing tonight!

Probably would be a nice combo.

Yea Mark... I'll get a chance to really work that AML EQ with the Stam67 today.
One thing already on my limited tests with the AML.... I was almost ready to sell my vintage U87 because I wasn't crazy about it through any of my CAPI pres... VP312, VP28, VP28 Platinum. But I'm glad I didn't because this 1073 wth the EQ button 'in' is a great match for it. Smooths it out in all of the right places.
I used the U87 > AML > Kt-2A > Serp SA-76 and got the best sound I've ever gotten out of the 87- instantly usable, no mud, no pinch at 3k, no sibilance. Diggin it!
