I've got an old 58 with a blown out cartridge. I'm not into buying a Shure replacement because they're pricey and I could probably find a used 58 and save myself the trouble. Has anyone ever tried the Chinese copy cartridge? (See HERE on eBay) Is it worth an hour of my time or will it sound like crap?

Don't waste your money on Chinese knockoffs.

They fit and make sound but internally aren't the same design as the official Shure capsule and may or may not sound the same. I bought a 57 cartridge to play around with and it wasn't even close to being similar design. Didn't sound very close either. Usable as a mic, but didn't have the SM sound.

But you can check out the used market and I see them for 50-70$ all day long.

But maybe that's a buddy deal from my dealer I've been working with for 40 years, give or take.
Still, the Chinese knockoff Shures I've encountered have been pretty poor.

They used to be a lot cheaper, as did the full mics too! I remember when a brand new 57 was 49$.. You can now set your watch by the regular annual price increases on the SM mics..

I don't know why Shure supplies a replacement part that financially makes no sense for the customer to buy.

Not sure they still have it but worth checking out. You send them the old mic and something like $50 bucks and they send you a new mic.
