Does anyone make a tube based stereo pre-amp that easily switches for bussing duties. I stumbled on treeaudio's The Trunk and don't ask me why but I thought how cool would it be if instead of being a monitor selector, it was configured more like drbill's Silver Bullet. For that matter, why not make compressors that way too?

The Trunk actually does what you say, although it's not very well explained on their site.

Maybe so, but the format and price is wrong. It may very well be a reasonable price for what it is, but I don't know that I want to pay for an "all tube" power supply. I would think most people would be happy with tubes in the signal path only, and I would prefer a 3 or even 4U rackmount over something taking up space on my desktop. I'm thinking that what I'm describing coming in around $2500 would garner a lot of interest for hybrid type folks, no? Maybe the same price if it's a compressor?

How about a pair of these? www.locomotiveaudio.com/wt-72?lightbox=dataItem-jn3mfkriThey have a switch to accept line or mic level and sound wonderful.

But do they have and switch between inputs? ..and outputs for that matter? I'm thinking of something along the lines of the SB, but with tubes. I'd like to use it while tracking, then hit a switch, use it on a buss for a bounce, then back to tracking, then back to the master buss, etc. In other words, in a hybrid system with a minimal amount of outboard, I don't want to deal with a patchbay, etc.

If you don’t want a patchbay, the Silver Bullet is unique. If you can use one, the Black Box HG-2 is what you are describing, and it is awesome. I can’t imagine not having it.

I love that the HG-2 offers a range of character - It has everything except the switching. That's the innovative piece that the Silver Bullet brings to the game that no one else seems to want to replicate. I've already got the preamps that make me happy for the very specific tracking chains that I use. It's the tubey goodness that I'm looking for more of, but I don't want a one trick pony that just stays on the 2-buss, etc. It's probably not what working studios need - they have a lot of gear, patchbays, and have to have options - but I wonder that there's more of a market for such a product with what I would characterize as the hybrid home studio demographic.

FWIW I have never bothered tracking through the Black Box. I know it’s there for me come mix time.

This is close if not about what I'm talking about. I assume I would have a set of cables 'permanently' patched to the DI inputs on the face - not pretty ..but functional. Not as much range of character as the BG-2, and while the EQ would be convenient on the tracking side, I don't know how usable it would be on the mastering side. An interesting piece for sure.

It has mic inputs and line inputs in the back. It can go from clean to full on balls out with the attitude section. Triode or pentode tube selection. The eq is also nice. I had it on my drums all the time when I owned it.

Have you checked out Sonic Farms? Their stuff looks really cool, particularly the newish Xcalibur JC, which appears to tick all the boxes for you.
