hmm tough call. I like them both for different reasons. I can see your problem haha can we pick one for the Guitars and one for the Vocals?? haha
Quite different though. Stoked to hear what causes the differences.

Basically exactly what I was going to say.....
Preamp 1 is warmer, more low-mids and it tames the high mids more when your vocal goes up an octave.
Preamp 2 is much cleaner in the low-mids but is probably more useful in most situations when stacking tracks with a single preamp.
It's like Pre1 is more overtly tube like a 610... and Pre2 is from the cleaner tube camp like a LaChapelle.
I'd like pre2 on the acoustics and pre1 on the vox. Great sound either way.

I was going for #2 for guitars and #1 for vocals too haha

Same. I listened all the way through on Preamp A and thought thats about as good as it gets. Then in a nanosecond of hearing guitar in preamp 2 it won me over. Vocals had a vintage-ness to them on 2, I kinda preferred 1 for vocal as it’s ‘nearer’ sounding, still 2 has a sound that is kind of distant and reminds me of magic and mystery.

What if I can split the difference between the two?

Im realizing im backwards...sorry. I wanted #1(the darker one) on guitars and #2 for vocal(Less dark). Whatever. Both super cool sounding. Could use them both easily, actually made me think one sounded vintage and the other more modern.
Okay im done

There’s something a bit “metallic” and unnatural in sample 2. I have found myself eqing it out of vocals.
I may play around a bit with preamp 1 and adjust some things.
Endless pursuits.

These are all recorded through an AKG 414. I have the same versions but with vocals through a Flea 47. I’ll post those tomorrow.

What if I can split the difference between the two? I think that might be perfect. If you can get Pre2 to sound a 'little' warmer and absorb some of those high-mids like Pre1 I think it would sound killer. BTW.... what exactly does the Ribbon switch do on the preamp? Is it just an impedance change or does it alter the gain structure also? I might buy one of these down the road if some of my freaking clients would pay me

But that metallic sound is what I think the 414 always does to the high end. Curious indeed to hear the Flea! In fact im now wondering in #1 would be too dark most the time knowing its a 414 going in..

Always end up pulling back the 1.5k-3k region. However, on Preamp 1 it actually seems to have more air, more guts, and less reediness. I’ll post it in a moment.

Update: There are now two versions of each preamp sample in the dropbox. Vocals with AKG C414 XLS and Flea 47.

Preamp 2. Preamp 1 gives a nasal midrange in some spots that bugs me to no end. It's much worse on the 414 than the U47 though but preamp 2 sounds great on either one.
