I like the M149 better on your voice here. The UT47 sounds a little hard in comparison in this situation. Great voice, thanks for sharing. Thanks Brent! I agree — I thought the UT was a little aggressive in the upper mids. It did sound pretty nice when I tried it in some dense mixes, though.

Actually, slightly preferred the UT 47FET for your voice. This song/this key anyway. (I'm imagining your voice in a typical mix-not solo BTW) Interesting your links showed on the computer, not my Android phone. Agree on the "great voice" though. Post more often! Chris

I prefered the 149. That U47 FET is an excellent mic. I've used two vintage 47 FET's many times and Chad's 47 sounds right, but they're never my first choice for vocals, even though I have them available.

I can totally see a preference for the FET 47. It definitely has a really cool “bite” to it and is an overall excellent mic for $800. I’m just so used to my M149 at this point, it’s hard for me to adjust to anything else. I’ll probably eat my words if I ever get a Tele U47 or 251 in my hands, though.

I initially thought I was interested in the UT 47FET. I see the occasional word here or there about it, but the lack of video and audio is a bit concerning, IMO.
And the one thing that has kept me from pulling the trigger on one is what a trusted major equipment supplier told me when I first asked about it: the build quality is questionable...that I'd be better off (and happier) long term with something else.
I listened to the files posted earlier (thanks!) on my phone. I'm simply going to stop doing that. I've had a busy day in the studio today, and had a hard time making time to put them on my studio monitors. No need for me to try and discern any real sort of differences with such limited playback. The vocal was very nice, though!
I looked at the Bock iFet, but those are out of production currently. No indication that they'll return to making them with the UA deal. Hard to find used lately.
The Neumann reissue is more than I want to pay.
The Heiserman appeals to me, but their seeming lack of interest in returning emails is off-putting.
I'd like a good 47FET, but it appears I'm in a bit of 47 limbo there. I have a Soundelux E47 these last 18 years and it's been a fine addition to the proceedings here. But I want a high SPL FET.
What's a brother to do? :-)

The UT 47FET is difficult to buy over here, but I scored one in the UK last December. Seems it was the only one they had, it was out of stock after I bought it. I only used it in its traditional role on kick and toms so far, but I like it. I'll use it on a bass session later this month. For a 47FET clone, it's a great choice, especially considering the price. SOS gave it great review and compared it directly with the current Neumann model, which, together with a some sound samples I heard online (I know...) convinced me to buy it.
For vocals, I still prefer my U47 from Andreas Grosser, although the 47FET sounded good on some demo vocals I did. But I agree, it's more agressive on vocals than the older U47. Which might not be a bad thing for rock vocals.

A 47 FET makes a great vocal microphone for very high SPL metal vocals. Our friend cdkelly is quite the proficient Metal producer and could probably expound on that.

I found my friend enjoyed it more the i did as i rarely used it due to covid so I let my friend buy it from me. But no way was it questionable in construction and i had one of the first batches. I would buy another one without hesitation if i needed it but iam not recording bands or drummers at the moment.

Agreed — when I had the FET47, I was actually surprised by how impressive the build quality was. Thing felt like a friggin' brick and was absolutely flawless from a design standpoint. I don't think UT cut any corners on the build.

srb Vincent R. and anyone else who's interested I'm a little reluctant to share because I kind of hate the way I sang this, but here ya go. FET47 against my M149. I was probably hitting the mic pre too hard and compressing too much, and I've since found a much better spot in my room + room treatment config. OK, enough excuses: M149: https%3A//soundcloud.com/tkaitkai/vocal1-m149UT FET47: https%3A//soundcloud.com/tkaitkai/vocal1-utfet47-2 Nice comparison. The UT FET47 holds up really well, and sounds like I’d expect a FET mic to sound. I still want to hear it next to a Neumann U47 FET.

I would say that your "trusted major equipment supplier" just became a little less trustworthy.

fwiw I have the Heiserman H47 fet and love it - I use it on my kick drum primarily and it's awesome. Used it recently as a mono OH and I got a real vintage vibe that was just was the track needed. I don't remember the explanation but Eric told me about how both pads (-6db, -10db) interact when used together. I think the 10db pad has a slight low end enhancing effect when engaged. For kick I keep both engaged and it brings the boom. For my OH use I took both pads off and it was open and full.

I have not tested the mic, but I have seen it in person and it's build quality is impressive.

A few thoughts? A U47 "clone" must have three components to be considered as such: a K47 (or perfectly working M7) capsule, BV8 transformer, and VF14m tube. If it doesn't have those, it ain't a 47. It also should be operating at the optimal 105 volts. Finally, the body and construction must be the same, coincidently the most obtainable aspect to replicate. Case in point. The WARM 47 uses a 12AX7, the same tube as an MXL and dozens of other cheap microphones. The only thing it has in common with a U47 is that it sorta resembles one - kinda - and it has a 47 in its name. You can easily design a cheap mic head amp circuit with a slight bump in the low mids and the 2k region. You might even convince some people that it sounds similar in terms of EQ tone. But the reason those classic mics have stood the test of time is their unparalleled resolution. Neumann had so much R&D money back when radio and recording were king. The small builders can't compete, and there is not a big enough market for the big manufacturers. If you want a great and affordable mic, don't look for a U47 "clone." Grab an AKG 414 and make a killer record with it! If it's an old 414EB or possibly a 414p48, sure. The newer they get the greater the mediocrity. The new ones pretty much stink.

How can you say that when, for example, Chandler have only made two mics starting a couple of years ago? I think there's a lot to be said for a track record that stretches back over 90 years and hundreds of models, in the case of Neumann. Didn't Neumann make only one mic at first?

I've not had any experience with the mic, either; so, I'm depending on the direct experience of others, and that seems positive. And I'm happy for those who feel they've invested wisely. And, I certainly haven't intended to come across as pejorative of the mic, and certainly not its builder. I had questions or concerns, and this thread (and our conversation) have helped to answer and assuage. As in lots of other things, matters of "good" and of "quality" are subjective...and relative. And that's alright with me. ✌
