The Engineers in the room Craig Alvin and Mitch Dane actually prefer the Heiserman.. If you listen to the oooos at the end the fred mic distorts in a way that is pretty ugly.

IME, the real differences between high end 47 clones and the vintage greats is in the distortion when you push the mic's hard. That's where the rubber meets the road, and where most clones fall short. The vintage mics often have that wonderful (as ward mentioned) buttery distortion that the clones can't touch. Would have loved to have exact performances with the two side by side with a vocalist / song that really PUSHES the mic(s) hard. That's where you hear the difference if there is one. Someone like Oren Waters really grinding hard. That would tell even more for me.

I wish it was the same take, picking up on some performance differences (and maybe proximity?) differences that hard difficult to parse out. We considered doing the same take, but the different channels on the neve sounded more different than the two mics... Maybe next time we're in Nashville we can set something up that would allow for a single take comparison.

And someone like Vincent "pushing it hard", would be great too! If Heiserman and Vincent don't mind, I'd look forward to that very much. That's a fantastic Tenor voice, we're all familiar with. (I include John K. as a "great voice" too BTW) Chris

And truth be told... There are quite a few other strong singers at RGO. Like MJB/Ward/Wiz/Ragan to just name a few.
Anyone like Ward, who already have a Heiserman, any singing clips would be appreciated also. Chris

My preference - a gritty black gospel, R&B (traditional) voice. That's where it really comes into play.

I’d love to hear any of your guys’ voices on the Heiserman. Vincent’s voice is a great “stress test” for a mic and I mean that as a compliment.

Our other demo unit is tied up at the moment (at EastWest Studios in LA), but hoping to get it back pretty soon.... Hopefully we can arrange something once we get it back.

If I can't distort this thing - or make it pinch in the mids - then we're all pretty safe.

BTW - funny little story.
I had a long day today. It reveals my shortcomings as a human being lol. So - I've been totally busy/procrastinating finishing up a project...and the artist has been kinda up my butt to finish. I needed to record some harmonies for a couple of the songs, so I fire up the new Heiserman 47 and..."whooooosssshhhhhhh"...lowish level white noise. and barely can hear the signal. I double check everything, reseat connections, change pres. Same thing. Then I think well damn, must be the tube. So, I text Dave and say I'm gonna drop by with it. So then - the girl is texting me asking me when I'm gonna finish. So, I throw the mic under the bus and text something like "the effing new mic isn't working so I have to waste my time and drive across town..." Really to establish the fact that she ain't getting the stuff for a bit. BUT - I texted that to Dave. lolololol
So, I apologized...but realized he probably thinks I'm a dick. Anyway - I get there and he looks it over. Tube tested a little funky, but he got it all sewn up and working. I get home: same thing. Now, THIS TIME, I am pissed if I've got to go back across town lol.
I decided to quadruple check my end to make sure I'm not a moron. Well, I'm a moron.
This project I'm doing was in 96...My hearback system is connected via adat, so the channels halve (that a word?) when I go to 96. I lose my verb in my headphones and the stereo playback shifts a channel and comes out mono. So, I was recording her vox in 48 and then converting to throw back in the mix. Sounds great and easier for her to record vox with. I pulled up the mix and was just gonna put in harms - FORGOT that my vocal would be on a different channel. So when I turned up my vocal channel all I was hearing was this white noise and barely hear my voice. Turns out the white noise was V-Delay on EG's with the "Age" noise thing turned up and coming out of the two mix. When I switch to 96, one side of the 2 mix goes into my normal vocal channel. So - what I thought was the mic screwing up was me being a dummy. Long day. Now I get to spend three hours in a session.

Next time I see Ivan, the owner of the Mozambique and Skyloft two of the really nice Restaurant/Clubs in Laguna...
I'll ask him if a "Microphone Testing Party" sometime, would be cool to have there as a "meetup". Just imagine the beautiful beaches, great weather, and all the bikini's! (save some for the girls though guys!)
Maybe we'll even bring the Karaoke machine! Chris
P.S. Both clubs are set up to record live BTW.

There should be a studio merit badge system for stuff like this.

Thanks for clarifying that Dr. Bill. Mine's not the right kind of voice for that. Too "sweet" at the top. Low end and midrange, however, I can pull it off though. Chris

My new project is raw rock and digging in on a more aggressive style with a scream, or just really aggressive music that requires angry singing...lol! This is the mic, I think. I will listen later. Can you get a Demo?

I feel for you Johnkenn! I am definitely no pro and anytime anything inexplicable happens here (other than in logic), the first thing I think is “ok, what have I done ! ” and retrace my signal path ( source to output) to find my typically self induced gremlin!

Thanks!! just wanted to mention that Heiserman will be at Summer NAMM but not with an official booth. We are attending some studio parties and events and can setup one on ones with serious buyers, We will be wandering the floor during the event as well. Just keep an eye out for us!!
