Indiehouse, I don't do the same take with two mics thing when I'm comparing mics. Of course using different takes has issues, but so does the same take with two mics, so I just do what works best for me. The levels were matched. The 67 sounded bigger than all the mics I tried. It's the mic, not the positioning or take. Here's a link to the page where I compared the vintage U47, M49, U67, C12, Blackspade UM-17R and the Soyuz 0-19 FET. realgearonline.com/thread/5685/high-end-mic-shootout-preview?page=4

Funny that "intellectually" I'd expect the 47 to sound the biggest otherwise... Chris

I gotta say, I spent an afternoon with Martin John Butler trying a few microphones. He is ridiculously consistent vocally.

Thanks Vincent. Chess, I too expected the U47 to be bigger than life. What it was could be called perfect. Everything was 100% right about it.
It just happens the push at certain frequencies and the width of the soundstage of the U67 suits me. The 67 has one quality I haven't heard an explanation for. The vocal pushes any reverb to the sides, you feel and hear the "room" more in a good way. But it somehow maintains focus while sounding wider than any other mic. 6 years ago, I bought a Bock U95. I had to sell it because the pickup pattern bugged me. It almost sounded like it was in omni mode even though it was in cardioid. The U67 is just as wide sounding, even wider, yet it keeps your focus where it should be.
Vincent, how would you describe an M49 in comparison?

I can tell the new Soundelux U99, works similarly on me-as the 67 on you.
My newest version of the U195, also has a very wide cardiod pattern. It's the "bring it to the real studio" mic now, as a result. (it trumps the U87ai BTW)
The modern tone of the U195 (set flat) is handy for more contemporary style songs. Nice alternative to the Sony C800G IMHO. Chris

The new U99 looks really nice. I’d love to try one sometime. Martin John Butler , the M49 is essentially a more hifi U47. There is a greater dynamic range, less boosted, and a slight rolloff on the bottom to help with a touch of proximity. The U67 is fairly neutral all the way through, with a small bump at the very top at 9k. The drastically slanted grill helps further with proximity effect, but it is still a very warm microphone. For me the 49 sounds huge through out, while the 67 just sounds like the source, but with a little something extra. Hearing you on the M49 is reminiscent of what I felt when I heard jtc111 on the FleA 49. There is something being enhanced that just doesn’t suit your voices. That said, I think I could make it work with some EQ. I did like Jim’s voice on the MK67, but it was a different kind of sound than his FleA 47 which was blatantly “his mic.” If I’m honest, my aesthetic prefers your voice on the U47, but I know why you love the sound you get from a U67.

The "47" performance, by MJB was more "even" in volume level. The "67" performance, had more variance in volume level. Taking that into account... They were a "dead heat" for me. The 67 was more up front, the 47 a bit farther back in relation to the track. An extremely tough choice for me (in the lower price ranges), would be Heiserman H47 FET vs. used Neumann TLM67 or U89i. The fact that a good buddy has an excellent U87ai, helps keep some money in my pocket! Chris

The U67 was my first choice, the U47 my second! The 67 made me sing a little better. It flatters my voice in places. I realize that it's not as accurate, but it's vibe and energy I look for first. I've posted this a few times, but THIS is exactly what I'm looking for in mic sound:

I love Pete's "Who Demos" and the "demo-ish" stuff like this. Big fan of Daltrey's singing too, but Pete's greater use of melodic nuance is a an excellent counterpoint. Part of my current singing study right now stylistically, is both Pete's & Roger's phrasing approach. Thanks MJB for posting this, and-yes-the 67 helps bring you closer to this type of "sound" (over the 47). Chris P.S. Fantastic cover version of that Beat song! My tonality is closer to Pete's BTW, over Roger's, so Pete's version of those Who songs help me sing them better

You could sing into a tin-can and a string, and you'd be doing better than most. Your performances are always superb. Mic test or not. You're already there, so don't sweat it. Chad

Yes, RGO is an amazing place, with so many talented vocalists & instrumentalists. Maybe someday... An RGO concert made up of some of the "irregular regulars" would be a very cool thing to do! Maybe California(NAMM?)/Nashville/New York "get togethers"?
BTW the clip inspired me to listen to Pete's "Lifehouse demos" today (I've listened to them before). Sublime. What a genius! Chris

I went the DIY route as well, and could not be happier. Poctop PCB, Neumann K49, FAB transformer, and Phaedrus AC701k electronic tube. Sounds phenomenal. A pair for 3000$. If money was easy, I would have gone the exact same path, but with a Flea bodykit.
Does Flea still sell the M49 body kits? I would just email sales@flea-microphones.com. Ivan is very quick to respond. Just keep in mind the time difference depending on where you are. I had spoken with them about sourcing a few parts when I was contemplating a DIY for my second 49. They were willing to sell me their F47 (K47) Capsule, but not their transformers. Not sure about the body kit though.
