I'm on an incredibly tight deadline and I need to figure this out. I'm running a session at 48k and got a remote player to do a track. I told him I was working at 48k and sent him an mp3. I received back a 44.1k WAV that plays at the correct pitch but wrong tempo. I don't know what he did or how, I suspect he simply played along to a slower speed version of my track. I checked and the WAV header is not a problem.
It's a pedal steel track, and I'm not sure he'll have time to redo it. He's also just a player, not a technical person.
What are my options? Find a time stretch that works?

When you say you have tried different picks, have you tried different sizes, shapes, thicknesses and materials? Nothing changes more the sound of an acoustic guitar than the pick.

I went with Izotope RX which I already own, since this had to be done now. Still curious about WaveLab!
I slowed down the drums 10%, from around 184 bpm to around 166. It sounds good enough, not perfect but more than serviceable.

I'm in the middle of a project and just found out that one of the songs was tracked way too fast and I can't sing it properly!!! Redoing the drums is not an option. Since I only have tracked drums, bass and scratch guitar/vocal, I could still try to slow down those drum tracks, probably redoing the bass.
I use Logic and I think it's got several ways to do it. I just need to find out what's the best one and how to maintain the sound quality as much as possible.
Any tips/hints? If you've ever done this, how far can you go before artifacts are audible? The song is so fast that even a few BPM would be helpful here.

I did listen to the end result, the “fake room”, and it didn’t strike me as something that couldn’t be done by sending the overheads to an appropriate reverb. I’ll watch some more for sure.

He uses a variety of plug ins to well emulate the sound of real room mikes: basically creating a room sound where there was none. I thought that was called “reverb” This reminds me, I have to try the Eventide plugin that does this, the “Berlin Bowie” thingy.

Wow I need to find some time to watch this. Also, I couldn't find the actual quote, but I'm pretty sure in the "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" movie one of the Funk Brothers says something like "people were searching for the Motown sound, was it the room? Was it the mics? No one ever thought maybe it was the musicians!". Did I dream this, or does anybody else remember a similar quote?

I watched the first 5 minutes of the video, it seems interesting but a bit too involved. I don't see how that would be different from sending the overhead to an appropriate reverb, unless the overhead is setup to pick cymbals only. I record a room mic most of the time, but my XY overhead into the Bricasti (or LiquidSonics 7th Heaven) sounds just as good or better!

I’ll highpass as high as 42Hz frequently. I only lowpass live recordings, 15k usually does no harm. I work on rock/Americana/folk rock mostly.
This is something I’m interested in and working on getting better at. I used to filter individual tracks by default until I realized is better to keep the phase relationships intact for multi-mic’d instruments.

Agreed. The mystery pre will require less work in the mix. Especially in a busy mix. The mystery pre still has the warmth, but with more definition. Either could work fine though. These vp28 samples sound like the OG models. Or are they the Platinum models? Also, what are the contender mystery pre's? It's the regular VP28 with 2520s in both positions! I'd love to hear the Platinum, the Capi Heider too, it seems like it might be an interesting option from what I've read! I'm not gonna drag this on forever the mystery preamp is the Tree Audio Branch! I swear that I knew it was the Tree Audio just by reading your description!!! It’s really incredible.

Did somebody say....preamp? Yeah, can you imagine if someone was making a great sounding and not insanely expensive 4-channel tube pre? BTW you’re still selling the stereo one right?

One year later: success!!!
I just got around to reamping some tracks with the Little Labs DI. It works! And it sounds great into my Tweed Deluxe.
I had to bump up the gain of the DI track (in fact I normalized it) and did the convoluted Logic I/O setup, with two busses, to avoid latency/sync problems.
Once that was sorted... sweetness!

That's exactly my thinking. I track drum kits frequently (and full bands too) and I'm not too fond of mix-and-match preamps for that, though API-style on kick and snare is usually hard to beat. Even though the DAV is very affordable (and it's not transformer based) it really sounds great with almost anything. I could use four more of those. Then there are I/O considerations, selling off some of my pres... Not an easy decision.

I'm wondering whether I should sell some of my preamps and get multiples of the same pre. This has been brought up a few times in threads about studio consoles. It used to be that a studio would have a desk and those were the preamps you would have. Maybe a special outboard unit or two. I think that helps with workflow (limiting choices) and it might also help with sonics.
Over the years I've collected a few styles of preamps: a pair of Warm Audio TB (upgraded with LTL Rogue 5 Op Amps), which are cool. A Golden Age Pre73 MkIII, upgraded with Carnhill transformers and with the extra EQ half rack, cool too. A pair of LTL Chromas, very useful. A quartet of DAV Broadhurst Gardens, they never disappoint. And a Tree Audio The Branch II, which is just awesome.
However, because I like to "maximize" the capture, I think I spend too much time testing the several Neve/API/clean/Tube flavors, and then there are a few mics that I want to try, etc.
Maybe I should eliminate some of the variables and get another four channels of DAV. The Manley Force looks like a very good idea too.
Any thoughts?

I thought this had its own thread but I can't find it. There's been some talk about the Rule Tec pultec plugin, and I finally demo'ed it. It's amazing! www.noiseash.com/rule-tec-eq1a/It's on sale now for 30 bucks. It really gave me the same feeling as using my Retro 2A3. If anything, I found that the Rule Tec was a bit more forgiving and "nicer" sounding, which is fine by me! I'm not saying it beats the hardware, but it really gives me confidence for those times I want to stay in the box or when I'm out of Pultec-style channels. I tried the big version with the filters and the midrange EQ but when I want a Pultec I don't want to think too much, so I went for the regular version.

Hi Chris, thanks for joining! A slight side tangent, because it was mentioned in the thread. If you ever think of building robotic control for guitar amps (like Neil Young’s Whizzer that controls his Fender Deluxe), that could be really something. I’d buy that for myself!

Only UA ones. However, Softube’s plugins can’t be beat.

Well, it's a line level device so you can't really use it to control the gain of a mic pre, only the output.

On an informal listen, A sounds just like my U67 reissue. Dark on top and very very detailed in the mids.
