Chad Kelly from Signal Art Electronics just performed a resuscitation on my 251 CLone Mic. The Beesneez Capsule died and the mic needed some upgrades. Chad gave it the full work over making a few suggestions here and there from his immense mic building/repairing experience. I was surprised at how quick the mic came back to me in Australia form USA - WOW awesome service and it was cheaper and more efficient to send it USA then get it done in Australia. So if you are looking for a good service guy Chad could just be your man. The mic is pretty close to my Bock 251/ Like there could only be 5%-7% difference in sonics. I think with a maybe a CT12 Capsule or Eric - Capsule it would get it there. Maybe my next upgrade. For all those people wondering about some of these Boutique Mic builders and how therte quality stands up, I can vouch for Chad. This is my second mic that has been in his hands. Cheers

BN capsule only worked on one side in the end. I have not had much luck with BN mics over the last few years. But when they are working they sound pretty decent.

Thanks guys, btw working on that fellow's 251 as well as a recent studio visit caused me to get nostalgic and finally revisit the Ela M 251 idea. I have fixed a few and built a few on request for customers over the years, and of course worked to develop one for a former company I was associated with; but never decided to make it a product until now. I'm curious if there is an interest for such a thing. It's 100% handmade, all made here; but I am trying to make both an economical version to compete with some of the aforementioned affordable reproductions, as well as a spare-no-expense version with NOS GE 6072's and a Heiserman AKG CK-12 capsule replica. Check the blog link for way too much info and pics. I'm curious to know if there's sufficient interest out there for a baseline edition and premium edition 251. www.signalartelectronics.com/blog/revisiting-the-past-the-ela-m-251

That would keep me from putting money down on one I might never see for years. I'd be interested in the NOS 5 star and Tim Campbell capsule. Can you make Tim's capsule happen? Hi Bill, excellent. If you are interested, I'll message Tim Campbell and see what his lead times are looking like these days. In the times I've communicated with him before; there was always a wait time for them. I was planning to use Eric Heiserman's CK-12 on the premium ones as a general rule, because I like to make a 'US made' product as much so as practical; however, I know Tim makes a great capsule and I aim to please, of course. Eric did show his CK-12's at Winter NAMM alongside an AKG original CK-12 in an identical pair of 414's, and you literally could not hear the difference... no one could. So I do feel confident about that part; but I can do whatever you like. Send me a pm and let me know if/when you're ready, and then I'll reach out to Tim and see how he's doing with regard to capsules, and get the other balls rolling. Thanks!-CK

Thanks Chad! I'm not in a rush. Let me check out your blog, and I'll get back to you and hear your thoughts. I just got kind of woken back up to the possibility with the Stem 251, but I don't want to go thru that whole drama, time wait thing, so your option seems like it might be good. Thanks, Bill

I wonder what capsule it is; I know it won't be Eric's after seeing the drama unfold. lol Chad

It looks like he's trying to save a bit of money in regards to the mic body/cable/psu; but that is totally understandable to be able to deliver it at such a good price. I can't even compete with that pricing, since I want to use the nice Beesneez body and a German wood box, handmade US supply, etc. which is going to push the costs up higher. That's bad news for me, I suppose; but I'm not out to move huge numbers of anything, really. I just like it when a few ppl appreciate these pieces.

Having a higher price is fine when you can substantiate why?
I think of your business as boutique in the best sense of that: that you are being very selective about parts and higher quality and expertly hand built.
For special mikes, that makes sense to me.

If you deliver an outstanding 251 clone for a higher price than competition, but you deliver in time, and with great care of quality, even if they sound the same, then the price difference is totally worth it.

Man that Flea sounds absolutely gorgeous, I love that open airy top end. The Signal Arts is also pretty nice to my ear with a darker more obvious texture.

I agree. The one thing that always catches my ear on the Flea is the evenness of the natural compression from the mics tube and circuit, not just in how it handles dynamic range but also in Freq response. Where some mics character can change subtly depending on the vocal range and note being hit from high to low, they seem to stay very consistent to me. I also think Chad does a great job with his Mic's and the SAE sounds good offering excellent value and I'm sure you can make a good record with any of these mic's
