I just ordered a 308 after seeing Darrel Thorp use one on toms/floor. I'll experiment on that application and report back. (I normally use a CAD M179 on figure of 8 for this.) This Darrel Thorpe video? This was posted yesterday. My comment is way older. I was referring to one of his classes on ProMixAcademy.

I still need to try in on toms. Many times it's just too big to fit in the space, and it'll be hard to beat the Oktava MK-102's. Still winning on acoustic bass near drums.

Anyhow, I bought 4 of these to replace my old set of Neumann U89s on toms which were occasionally getting beaten and although much better than 421s or Cad M179s, still had a fair bit of cymbal bleed in the capture.
These microphones are THE TITS! Highly recommended!
Listen for yourselves. REcording chains are LS308s -> API 3124 -> Avid HD i/o -> Pro Tools. No editing, Just as is captured/

I think Trent is the one killing it! Someone should have been screaming from the rooftops: HOLY SHEET THERE'S THESE AMAZING TOM MICS YOU NEED! To all of us.

impressive all the tone you'd want Right? Just a regular run of the mill set of Sonor drums. Used the 12 13 and 14 toms, single ply remo heads.

I've been going in the direction of figure 8 pattern mics after hearing people like Doug and Craig talk about things like the Oktava 012 figure 8 head or the AEA R-92. I wonder if they somehow modded a bi-directional pattern to achieve this?

It's got an 'unused' capsule in the 'dead end'. And I suspect the same as you!

Yeah from just reading up on them, same phase cancellation idea as used in a shotgun mic to achieve the narrow lobe pattern. It’s really nothing new, others have tried just expense and manufacturing techniques have doomed the results. From all reports Trent seams to have nailed it.

OK I’ll be honest here a lot of these early “ attempts “ would walk through our door to demo. The majority were failures or too delicate. These have made me quite jaded, thus I blew the Lauten attempts off, but You Doug and a couple of others have me itching to try these. First very rare used, a very very good sign, second I need to have some cash around because if they work I’m going to want a mic case full.

After recording with the Lauten LS-308's on toms for the last week, I can definitely say IMO they are the best tom mics money can buy! Excellent rejection, great sounding, easy to position > no more cymbal bleed issues (thanks Ward for the recommendation)

Anyone try these on Snare? I’ve been tempted to try these, seems like a really interesting design idea.
